HUMANITY:

Uncounted millions of years prior to the current age of Enforced Harmony there lived a species of Simian-Descendants known as humans.
While not the oldest of the spacefaring species, humanity had spread rapidly throughout the stars, aided by a primitive but effective method of surpassing the speed of light. Eventually they had become so numerous that multiple nations had formed on habitable planets throughout the galaxy. Eventually the humans within those nations became distinct from their ancestors, and from their counterparts. Thus, humanity ceased to exist as one race and multiple races came into existence.

THE AZURE PLANET EMPIRE:

In the Year 1 IG (See "Intergalactic Calendar" for Details) the Azure Planet Empire was founded by a coalition of species brought together by the First of the Supreme Heirarchs. Most of these species were not coincidentally offshoots of the Human race, though not all of them were. The Azure Planet Empire was named after the Ancestral Homeworld of Human beings. Though there is some controversy regarding which planet that actually is (See "Homeworld Controversy" for details)

Over time the Azure Planet Empire grew to the point that, by 1593 IG it spanned over 14 galaxies and over sixteen hundred genetically distinct sentient species. Many of these worlds joined for mutual benefit, but a significant number joined in the face of annhilation. The Supreme Heirarch and his successors, as well as their respective administrations believed that stagnation was the greatest threat to their great state, and that expansion was the only way to prevent the inevitable decay of an idle peace.

No race has been safe. Either join the Empire willinginly and retain autonomy or be crushed in the face of overwhelming odds. Imperial technology is generally far more advanced than the nations they encounter, but this has more to do with the Empire's incredible abundance of technical resources stemming from hundreds of species worth of intellect.

Despite the historical significance of human-offshoots in the Empire racial prejudices are not tolerated by the authorities, as they lead to disruptive conflict. Alien species are all given the same rights and privileges upon indoctrination into the Empire and all words are afforded equal military protection save for the Capital systems, Military Bastions, and systems maintaining military industrial bases.

So far Imperial forces have not encountered anything comparable to their own forces, but due to the constant process of invasion and indoctrination of new nations, they are always ready in case a true threat comes along.

INTERGALACTIC CALENDAR:

The Intergalactic Calendar was established not in the year 1 IG as commonly believed, but in the year 284 IG after the Azure Planet Empire finalized the conquest of a second complete galaxy. This was done to establish a common measure of time within the Empire. It was however, made retoactive to the year of the Empire's founding to establish the common measure throughout historical records. The IG System is based on Human units of time (HSTUs or Human Standard Time Units).

HOMEWORLD CONTROVERSY:

It is a well known fact that Humans originally came from the Sol System, which is in the deepest core of the Azure Planet Empire. However which planet gave birth to the species is a subject of controversy and debate. Most scholars believe that it was the lush, oceanic world of Mars based on ancient technological and archeological remains found on the planet as well as the earliest historical records. However a fringe group of scientists believe that it was actually the third planet, Terra. This fringe group claims evidence that Mars shows evidence of ancient environmental alterations that suggest a previously inhospitable climate, while Earth has none. They also cite Earth's solar rotations as beeing eerily similar, although not 100% identical, to the Human Standard Time Units such as seconds, minutes and years. Most reputable historians dismiss these theories, although many admit that the sheer length of human history may obscure its earliest years.

PLANET DUNGEON:

Throughout the history of the Azure Planet Empire many worlds have earned the right to be named Dungeon. Dungeon is a title given to a world rendered marginally inhabitable by Imperial Enviroformers in order to house prisoners. While many planets prefer to handle their own minor crimes and executions, Dungeon is reserved for violent offenders, prisoners of war, and political prisoners who have been destined to disappear. A sentence on Dungeon is not necessarily a death sentence, so long as you are skilled enough to survive. The planet is usually chosen in an insolated sector of space and blockaded by a small task force, who have orders to bombard the planet if necessary to keep priosners from freeing themselves. Millions, sometimes billions of prisoners are dropped onto the service in container craft and left to fend forthemselves in the wilderness. Fresh water are nutritious food are generally scarce and the air would not be considered clean even at the best of times by normal environmental standards. However it provides enough for its inahbitants. Seas, if any, are usually quite toxic. Occaisionally the Empire will crash captured enemy warships of little value onto the surface and dump conquered military equipment unsuitable for Imperial use. Scavenging prisoners have used this to found clans on some Dungeon worlds. Despite this, they are still isolated on the planet and fight only to survive as long as they can.

THE NOMAD FLEET (Also known as EXILE FLEET):

Not everyone who fights the Azure Planet Empire dies, some of them retreat to fight another day. However a band of ships have been running ever since the first galaxy fell, picking up newcomers along the way and scrapping for parts, recruits, and fuel. Ships that join the Nomad Fleet no longer have home systems or bases to operate from, but they are stronger together and hope one day to turn around and carve a path through the Empire that pursues them. While they have not yet had the opportunity to do so, the Supreme Heirarch has mandated that this fleet is to be hunted down and destroyed on sight lest they ever manage to gain an advantage.
THE SUPREME HEIRARCH:

The first Supreme Heirarch was originally the Imperator of a small cluster of systems that included the legendary Sol System. Though an ancient conspiracy is suspected he nevertheless united several governments and established himself as the head of the new Azure Planet Empire. Even though the Empire is a Monarchy the issue of sucession remains a closely guarded secret. It is mandated that the term of a Supreme Heirarch cannot extend longer than fifty years, though the purpose is as mysterious as well.

FASTER THAN LIGHT TRAVEL:

The current method of FTL travel in use is a combination of an integrated FTL Drive along with a Gate system. The Gate system is used primarily for standard travel between Galaxies and augments the speed of an integrated drive. Integrated drives are far more practical for intra galactic travel and for scouting new galaxies that do not yet have a Gate installation.

Well, I'm still waiting to be accepted into the Writer's Guild, so I'll try to look at this from both angles.

- As far as FTL tech, for your premise of having multiple galaxies, this seems to work well. I've no problems with this part.

- You appear to have many sentient species upon which to draw - I've an idea for one that began as Protoss clones, but are now...something else, and I'm quite willing to work with you on fleshing them out for your universe.

- The true details of the Empire itself, as to its beginnings and such, are shrouded in mystery - which works quite well, and for many reasons. Has the Empire perpetuated a myth that the Emperor is always the same person, so that when a new Emperor is crowned, he(or she) takes the old name, to keep the myth alive?

- The Nomad/Exile fleet seems like a good point of origin for a rebellion-type story, and also has intrigue all by itself. Have the Exile ships been modified during their lifetimes to become habitat ships, of some sort? If this is the case, having people being born on certain ships and calling them "home" might be an interesting sociological angle.

- Dungeon worlds - I like this concept, but I detect a scent of Riddick a little here. ;) In any case, this concept is a fun one, and one that could almost be used as comic relief.

- Your "Mysterious Human Origin" thing is a great idea, and one that might have been perpetuated more out of propaganda than scientific truth - which sets an interesting premise for the Empire of your universe.

Do you have more that you're willing to post here, to the unwashed masses of the FanFic forum?

Thanks but i'd like to use this for my own ideas no offense. Especially if I flesh this out as far as I want to go I don't want to share the glory ;-)

The original idea when I first concieved all of this was one Emperor, referred to as the Azure Emperor. However with the God Emperor in 40K I did not want to be percieved as ripping him off. So I changed the title and added a little mystery.

The public of the Empire, no matter how prosperous doesn't want to be ruled by the same man for millenia, hence a 50 yr 'term limit'. Of course, when you're clonging yourself repeatedly ala Palpatine and LEx Luthor, it really doesn't matter much does it? But thats only one idea i've had and I may not take the clone angle.

Among the fleet there are food production craft and mobile manufacturing craft than can churn out starfighters and long range gunboats on the move as well as equipment for ground forces. However raw materials are hard to come by and the larger capital ships must be acquired as they travel from system to system, spreading the message about the oncoming Imperial threat. Shipyards don't travel well. There's a few weird angles i'd like to play out. Like you said, the sociaological angle of being raised on the run, or being a conqueror turned guerilla. Another concept i've been playing with are alien ships as a part of the fleet but none of the original crew left to man them, so you have other crewmen coming aboard and wondering who the hell built a weird craft like that.

My only real experience with Riddick is Pitch Black. I have seen bits and pieces of Chronicles, clips of the anime movie that takes place between those movies and I have never played any of the games. At any rate, Dungeon is where I really want to take the story first, simply put, the Empire terraforms worlds to conform to minimal standards of habitation and then dumps prisoners on them, giving them no chance to escape the planet. Clan warfare between rival groups of prisoners take place across the planet in a vain attempt to improve their shattered lives by obtaining resources.

I wanted to have this set so ludicrously far in the future that I could justify a very high tech level, and I figure after that long (millions of years since present day earth) we'll have obscured so much of our early history that the origins of humanity will be the subject of speculation more so than intelligent study.

There might be more soon, I have to transcribe an outline to put it in the wirters guild and i'll see what more I can come up with for here.

None taken - My Protoss story idea rapidly kept changing so much to the point where they weren't recognizable as Protoss much anymore, which gave me writer's block. I figured if the concepts were gathering dust for more than a day or so, I don't mind passing along the ideas.

Makes sense. You could, for instance, have the Emperor be simply a figurehead - the Empire would really be run by the Black Hand/CIA/Special Ops/other shadowy spy group, and control could be quietly fought over by other shadowy spy groups. Might be fun for intrigue and to explain certain...odd commands from HQ.

Personally, I think that if you're going to go the clone route, you should also include DNA sequence specialization (for instance) that would let one modify a genome to suit one's tastes. I would imagine, especially since our human DNA genome was entirely mapped already in reality, this shouldn't be too far-fetched - basically, it would be a plot engine to explain why different-looking troops act, think, and move as one. This might be the only way Humans can proliferate enough to keep this expansionistic push going, but that depends on how rapidly you have the expansion run.

For instance, making a "push" every 50 years or so would be slow, but one could allow for a generation's worth of children to replace all the losses in the previous push and then some, and would allow one to garrison captured planets with lots of soldiers immediately once the planet falls, thus making sure the planet is that much more firmly in your grasp.

Then again, applying stuff from The Art of War, or A Book of Five Rings can make tactics in a battle or plot very interesting. ;)

All of that makes intuitive sense to me, especially about "old" capital ships whose original manufacturers and crew have long since departed, leaving very oddly-designed things behind. However, since these ships would be upgraded periodically if prominent advances are found, they might take on a very mishmash-ish appearance, owing to the technology of many different peoples ultimately comprising a ship. Even fighter craft might have a somewhat hackjob appearance, for that matter.

One of my favorite movies, actually. The movie Chronicles of Riddick explains his character a bit better with some admittedly stupid plot (bowel) movements, but it was a fun movie to watch.

Darth Fanboy wrote:I have seen bits and pieces of Chronicles, clips of the anime movie that takes place between those movies and I have never played any of the games.
Just for the record, I've never played any of the games, and thought the 30-minute anime sucked asshole dry.

That could be a story setting all by itself, or could even be referenced by certain citizens "tuning in" to view prisoners give real-life entertainment. Violence, bloodshed, intrigue - reality TV at it's logical sick conclusion.

That makes sense - it both gives you quite a bit of elbow room for sci-fi toys, and enough also to give things we now consider common knowledge a nearly mythic quality.

Alright, I look forward to seeing more about this. Also, would you mind asking RedImperator to check his PM's at his earliest convenience? ;)
