Dude, where's my flying car?
No, seriously, where the fuck is my flying car? When i was little, i used to talk to my brother about the 'future', and we both thought that by the 21st century surely they would have flying cars. You know, like speeders in SW.
Well...where the fuck are they!?
Electro-magnetic levitation is feasable. Why not put mag-rails under streets and create the ability to make a flying car? Or why not use hoverjets, like the Tau hovertanks in 40K? It cand be that hard, can it?
I should be flying in my fucking GEV by now, or at least hoverin'...not driving my mom's hybrid! What the fuck have they done with my god damn flying car? Does anyone know why they havent even tried to develop the technology...
(i have a theory about car companies and tire companies, and them surpressing the technology but thats another story)

Probably because it would cost hundreds of billions of dollars, provide no tangible benefit, and if your car breaks down, it'll fall on someone's head.
Any city gets what it admires, will pay for, and, ultimately, deserves…We want and deserve tin-can architecture in a tinhorn culture. Re: Dude, where's my flying car?
Can't do it with current technology. If a car breaks down or goes "off the rails" so to speak then seriously bad things happen. The other issue is current tech only allows vehicles to go in straight guided lines, which won't work since cars make all sorts of random turns and lane changes.18-Till-I-Die wrote:Electro-magnetic levitation is feasable. If you want a vehicle that gets 2 miles/gallon that's noisier than a prop plane then sure. A hovercar is hideously inefficient to say the least, and there'd be serious reliability problems, not to mention that it'll cost the better part of a million bucks.Or why not use hoverjets, like the Tau hovertanks in 40K? It cand be that hard, can it?
Ah no, the flying car is what happens when artists delude themselves into thinking they're engineers.I should be flying in my fucking GEV by now, or at least hoverin'...not driving my mom's hybrid! Re: Dude, where's my flying car?
Do you understand how expensive that would make personal vehicles? not to mention the cost of installing the rails on every fucking street. And how are you supposed to park on the side of the streets? How are you supposed to maneuver. Hover jets are also unfeasable. The would consume an enormous amount of fuel, for one thing, and again be much more expensive than automobile. However, several combanies are working on concepts for personal aircraft and helicopters...18-Till-I-Die wrote: Electro-magnetic levitation is feasable. Some thechnolegies just aren't feasable for widespread use due to cost or other practical considerationsI should be flying in my fucking GEV by now, or at least hoverin'...not driving my mom's hybrid! Now, that's just laughable. I don't think I need to explain why.(i have a theory about car companies and tire companies, and them surpressing the technology but thats another story)

So is a 1000 passenger airliner powered by Pluto Engines, that doesn't mean its practical or cost effective.Electro-magnetic levitation is feasable.
Because that would probably disable every computer in a city so fitted, cost billions, led to horrible accidents and generally be a terrible idea which gives no gain at all.Why not put mag-rails under streets and create the ability to make a flying car?
Without side skirts your building a helicopter, those cost millions and guzzle fuel. With side skirts the whole thing is a hovercraft and merely costs hundreds of thousands for a worthwhile lifting capability, guzzle fuels, is very hard to control and provides zero advantage and many huge disadvantages compared to wheels.Or why not use hoverjets, like the Tau hovertanks in 40K? It cand be that hard, can it?
What the fuck have you done with your brain? There's no advantage to flying cars unless they can get up over obstacles, that means helicopter capability and cost and the pilot training to match.I should be flying in my fucking GEV by now, or at least hoverin'...not driving my mom's hybrid! What the fuck have they done with my god damn flying car? Does anyone know why they havent even tried to develop the technology...
Please save it, what you've posted so far is more then enough stupidity for one thread to feed on.(i have a theory about car companies and tire companies, and them surpressing the technology but thats another story)

One of these days, hopfully in my lifetime, a flying car will be practical. Because thsi shit we have no wis just plain sad. Doesnt anyone else wonder why technologically a modern sports car is only more advanced than a Model T becaus eit has onboard navigation and inbuilt DVD players?
What i'm waiting for is a clean, efficient skycar, so i can ditch the hybrid i currently tool around in. Well, my mom too, it's her car...but i use it and stuff.

And by 'more advanced', i mean better. Cars today (especially SUVs) still belch out toxins, and still are bound to the road. I think we could do better. BUT, i also think the government should've put more effort into the spece program after the Lunar missions in the 60s, and started developing further exploration/expansion in space.

No, because that's not true and you know clearly jack shit about cars. A modern car generally won't even start without the engine computer running, and few of those could be built twenty years ago, let alone ninety.18-Till-I-Die wrote:One of these days, hopfully in my lifetime, a flying car will be practical. An aircraft is never going to beat a wheeled car on hard surface roads for efficiency. Your going to be waiting a very long time, and then your going to get to enjoy spending thousands of dollars to learn to fly. What i'm waiting for is a clean, efficient skycar, so i can ditch the hybrid i currently tool around in. Far less then they once did, and fossil fuel is cheep and available. Electric cars require banks of highly toxic batteries and have horrible ranges, hybrids exist and are being popular and fuel cells are still in devolopment. What more do you want?18-Till-I-Die wrote:And by 'more advanced', i mean better. Cars today (especially SUVs) still belch out toxins,
A car is only bound to the road if we design it to be, we do that because roads and designs tailored to them make for highly efficient vehicles. You meanwhile are demanding that everything flies; and powered flight in all its forms is the most inefficient form of transport we have. Nothing can or will change that since the only way to propel a flying vehicle is by jet thrust of some form and air compresses readily. A ground or water vehicle meanwhile has a nice uncompressible medium to push against and it needs to exert no energy to avoid falling back to the ground.and still are bound to the road.
Thats nice, no one cares.I think we could do better.
Which would accomplish what? Or is this just a random tangent?

Further space exploration would have given us more space time a few bases on mars and the moon, a few space stations, a few billion billion dollars more expenditure, but cheaper space travel and more common space travel. It would also have likley led to more space deaths than there have been.
We'd likley already have hydrogen powered cars...
but since 50% of mankind is utterly stupid, we'd still have those cars on roads with traffic lights and traffic.
oh, but those cars may be able to drive by themselves on autopilot with AI computers.
Theyre on the road though, because being on the road is safer, and more cost efficient.

Yeah, an AI autopilot car would be as cool as aflying car. It'd still be a road vehicle, but it would be much safer and more efficient probably to have a computer drive as opposed to a human. Unfortunately we dont have that yet either.jenat-lai wrote: oh, but those cars may be able to drive by themselves on autopilot with AI computers.
