Salt Lake, Utah. $1.79/ga. Christ, I can remember when it was 89 cents a gallon.

And I can remember when we had the highest gas prices in the nation :\ It's around $2 a gallon and climbing (don't remember the exact price as I don't drive), and Chevron is reacting violently to capping the price.

According to John Kerry, gas prices here are nearly $3/gallon. According to my persona observations, they average a little less than $2.

Yeah, its a dumb law. There is nothing wrong with standard federal gasoline standards but we get to use our special gas with MTBE ...hmmm yum!

Northern California gets it worse that So Cal. Right now $20 bucks wont completely fill my Civic EX. I think 87 right now is somewhere around $2.31 a gallon.

In the UK at least it is because 75p in the £ is Petrol Tax, most West European nations have a similar level of tax.

Here in Indiana its hovering at just below $2.00 a gallon.
Std. - $1.77
Mid. - $1.87
High. - $1.97

Considering that just last night when I filled up it was only 1.74 for mid-grade.......this should finally get them to curb the gas tax at least for a bit.

over here (RI Mass CT) MBTE was banned because it was poisoning the water. The funny thing is that the enviro-nuts shoved MBTE down our throats to reduce air polution, and never bothered to reasearch the shit fully. It was a year or two before they realized it was poisoning water and killing marine life.

Sorry Mr Jawa, but California has banned MTBE as well.http://www.energy.ca.gov/mtbe/ It has been banned since the start of the beginning of this year.
This adds to the cost even MORE, because they have to use ethanol as a substitute. The changeover, and the greater cost of ethanol, make California gas the highest.
Also, New York, Mass. and a few other states have banned MTBE as well, making ethanol more expencive as well. (supply and demand)
Also, there was a big explosion in a large Texas refinery recently.
And OPEC has announced they intend to cut production by 4%, AND China has increased it's oil consumption aprox 10% per year the last 3 years, in a global market that is only just barely ahead of demand.(and is expected to grow as much this year as well)
Compound interest adds up, and China is now the #3 importer of petrolium in the world, with. USA#1, andJapan #2.
The #3, (refinery explosion) doesn't have an immediate effect physicly on the supply, but causes prices to go up, via speculation, and futures markets.
Hmmmmmm.

It's around $1.59 where I live. I'd say more people travelling is one of the causes (IIRC, there was a short period of time after 9/11 where gas was 99 cents a gallon at some places where I lived).

The gas prices here in Germany consist of around 76% taxes (VAT, "eco tax", gas tax...), ~5% of misc stuff, and around 19% for the actual gas itself.

Isn't self serve illegal there, too, forcing full service upon everybody? Or was I lied to/mixing things up?

I don't know what you people are complaining about. Gas prices in Ontario have been fluctuating between 65 cents/L and 80 cents/L for the past few weeks; it's ridiculous.

PS. 65 CDN cents/L is around $2.00/gallon after currency and volume conversions. 80 CDN cents/L is around $2.45/gallon.

The worst thing about this is that so much of the price is taxes, and the gas tax is supposed to pay for roads and public transit, but instead it's simply going into the general slush fund for politicians to pay off their friends with.

OPEC has plans to cut production sometime this year, but negotiations are still going on as cutting production with the price of oil now would seem silly.

And we all know OPEC are perfectly rational people.

And besides, we could break OPEC if we wanted to...we produce just as
much oil as Saudi Arabia...
