Star Wars Galaxies Problem (new)

Post by Dorsk 81 »

I finally got Star Wars Galaxies running today, well I registered with the RIGHT Account Key anyway.
Anyway, the problem I'm having is it's downloading stuff and because I'm on 56k dial up it wont be finished for 2 days and due to my isp I get disconected every 2 hours.
The Question is, do I need all the stuff it's downloading before I can play?
Please? Someone help! This is really starting to piss me off.

Yep, there's been a lot of stuff added since release. It's pretty good about downloading, if you get disconnected you can generally pick up where it left off.

Well, on a 56k connection it takes ALOT of time and I cant be here every 2 hours for the next 2 days constantly reconnecting.
I'm stuck on certain file at the moment which is taking more than 2 hours to dl and it'll pick up on the overall percentage, but the file itself get reset to the begining, which means unless I get boradband, which I can't cos of where I live, then I'm gunna have to change ISPs!

Ok, I've downloaded all the new oatches or whatever and as I launch SWG and click PLAY it says "Direct3D could not be correctly initialized. Sometimes this will be fixed by rebooting your machine. If it still occurs after a fresh reboot, then your video card may not support hardware transform and lighting."
So....wtf does that mean?

1. Do you have DirectX9.0b? If not, get it.

2. Do you have the latest drivers for your graphics card? If not, get them.

3. If it still doesn't work, you may need to upgrade your graphics card.

if you have an nvidia chipset DO NOT use the latest drivers. It will fuck you up. Seriously, everyone's having a problem, and SOE is not addressing it as of late. Just make sure you have Direct X9.0b and use Nvidia's International driver from December (it's in the archive) number 45.23. That's what I have going.

Yes, sucks you have to wait so long but thems the breaks. They have so many new patches and add ins for you to get when you first install.

And just wait until you get all the bugs fixed. Then you'll see how badly this game sucks and how you went through all this for nothing.

Probably gonna need more memory too. I play Horizions personally and it's a shit to play unless your running atleast 1024 MB of memory.

Do you have an Ebay account Dorsk? You can get a cheap graphics card there no trouble.

I'm guessin intergrated is one of those comes with type deals which suck ass. The one I got that works fine is a GeForce FX 5200 128mb. That's an AGP though. The comp I had before this one, had onboard or intergrated, either way, I had to add a PCI card onto it.

Yea, you may mock my lack of technical understanding.
So GeForce4 is what you'd recommend? Would I be able to get it from any decent computer shop, cos I'm just about to run off into town to see if anyones got one. Thankfully today's pay day so if it cost's a bomb it shouldn't matter too much. Plus I've been meaning to get a port for my Firewire, kills two birds with one stone I guess.

How much is that gunna cost? The only reason I didn't get the next one up was cos it added something like £100 which I didn't have at the time.

No Ebay, lack of credit card+untrusting 'rents=no buying stuff online.

Someone's obviously never joined one of the dedicated RP groups, and has instead played with the 1337 kids who think that stacking character mods and using a big gun is "skillful".

I laugh at you, sir. The game is astounding when you play it with people who have brains in their skulls.

I upgraded to 1gB of RAM for Star Wars Galaxies, but only because I had tons of cash spare. In my opinion the game runs fine with 512mB, the only people who need 1gB are the non-RP'ers and 1337 assholes who run around in groups of 500 shooting rockets and flamethrowers everywhere.

Why do you have to alienate non RP's? I don't roleplay but I PvP for the skill aspect, fighting computer AI gets boring, fighting real people = challenge. I play MMORPGs with dedicated group of friends, we don't act like asses but beat people within the rules of the game, in essence we could be "roleplaying" imperials. SWG fell short on alot of levels and had game breaking bugs (I couldn't level my comando line for over a month), sure there might be some nice fluff but to say only l33t people need 1gig of ram is just stupid. Do you want to lag on Krayt Dragon raids? Do you want to lag when leaves fall from trees? You falling so easy into the carebear stereotype where the game is made for you only.

I wouldn't say just the 1337 or uber players need the 1Gig of RAM. I love to RP on the game, I really do. But when everyone looks like a bungled group of cheap pixels, it kinda takes away from the whole experience. I have all the options maxed out and using a shuttle or Correlian Corvet takes only a few seconds then the minutes I used to bitch and moan about. Of course I don't shuttles as much anymore since I have a speederbike.

Dorsk, join me on IM and I'll talk you through what your computer needs to play the game. It sounds like you need a full technical consulting.

I've gotta go back to where I got my graphics card from anyway, so I'll get them to do it.

I bought a GeFore 5900 (or something like that), got it home, took it out of the box and went to fit it and it turns out due to either the retardedness of Dell or GeForce that the dimensions of the card are wrong and it won't physicaly fit inside the computer, so I'm gunna go back to where I got it and kick up a big fuss about incompitant staff recommending the wrong products.
