Fla. Driver Admits to Fatal Hit-And-Run

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - A schoolteacher apologized Monday to the mother of two boys killed in a hit-and-run accident, admitting she was driving a car authorities believe struck four siblings as they crossed the street.

``I wish there was something I could say to ease your pain. I know there is nothing I can do to bring your precious sons back,'' Jennifer Porter said at a news conference called by her lawyer, Barry Cohen.

Porter, 28, was joined by her parents and younger sister. She did not answer questions and kept her eyes downcast during the meeting with reporters. Her family did not speak.

Bryant Wilkins, 13, and his 3-year-old brother, Durentae Caldwell, were killed in Wednesday's accident, which also injured a sister, Aquina Wilkins, 8, and a brother, LaJuan Davis, 2. Authorities have said it was possible the children were struck by two cars as Bryant led his sister and brothers across the street.

Cohen said at the time of the accident, Porter was too scared to stop. He declined to answer any other questions.

The children's mother, Malissa Wilkins, did not have a listed telephone number and could not immediately be reached for comment Monday.

According to Cohen, the accident happened as Porter was on her way home from Muller Magnet School in Tampa, where she teaches dance. After she contacted his office, he told authorities.

Cohen said she will talk to investigators ``just as soon as she is able to do so.''

Hillsborough County sheriff's spokesman Rod Reder could not say if Porter could face arrest. Police continued to look for another vehicle possibly involved in the crash.

On Saturday, Porter's parents went to the children's home to offer their condolences, Cohen said, but a family friend told them it was not the appropriate time to meet with the grieving mother.

Here's what I don't understand. She will talk to investigators "as soon as she is able to do so?" She fucking KILLED TWO KIDS AND MAIMED TWO OTHERS and then TOOK OFF and the investigators are waiting for HER convenience to question her? What the fuck?

This is a bit off topic, but here in Canada there's news going around about testing drivers every 5-10 years, I think that's a great idea considering she was TOO AFRAID TO STOP! Don't drive then geez

Well, I live here, so lemme offer my two cents:

She hit them. It was the most fucked up thing. First, one car hits the kids, then runs. Then, very shortly thereafter, another car comes by, hits the same group, and ALSO runs. When I heard about it the next day in the Trib, I couldn't fucking believe it. One of the cars dragged the boy (IIRC, the three year old) down to the street corner, before he finally became dislodged, and drove off!! Also, one of the vehicles seemed to stop for awhile, then ran off again. Unfortunately, I can't remember offhand which car did what.

But yeah, I'm not sure why HCSO is in doubt about the arrest since, IIRC, both vehicles hit the group of four kids, though I don't recall if it was one or the other or both that actually caused the two deaths, though all four were hurt as I recall.

Both cars were involved, they're looking for another car because there were two cars that hit the group. And only two of the children died, not four as someone said earlier.

Twice! How can people not notice a fucking kid on their bumper and/or not care! what the hell!

Maybe some people don't stop because they are worthless pieces of crap that refuse to own up to such an awful crime. Maybe others don't stop because they're afraid of this
happening?

Nice Catch-22, eh? Do you stop immediately, jump out of your car and see what you can do for the victim, while trying to call 9-11 on your cell phone? Then possibly risk being beaten nearly to death by the friends and family of the victim, and suffering permanent brain damage (which happened to an MTA driver in L.A. about 5 years ago) or do you drive a block away and call 9-11, and stay away from the angry crowd, which could turn into a mob in one second?

what the fuck., I gave up being suprised at how stupid drivers were a long time ago. Now we find that they have dangerous criminally negligent drivers TEACHING! Ok, in my day it was crazy just getting to school, and getting out, as the moms wanted to get to work and not belate, but this is rediculus.

on the other hand I did have a road rage incident, when I pulled to a stop for kids using the crosswalk, and the person in the SUV behind me "Tapped" my bumper....
