Got a new job......

Post by MKSheppard »

It's one hour away from me off the belt way in Alexandria Virginia...

I shall be working HERE:

http://www.alexsan.com/

Our plant is an Advanced Waste Treatment (AWT) facility with a design capacity of 54 million gallons per day (MGD). It is located on a 33-acre site on the north bank of Hunting Creek near its junction with the Potomac River. We provide sewage treatment for 325,000 people in a service area of 51 square miles, which includes the City of Alexandria and portions of Fairfax County. The original plant, which was placed in service in 1956, was an 18 MGD trickling filter facility. In 1984, we completed construction of a $101 million expansion and upgrade project to provide additional capacity and advanced treatment. Treatment processes include preliminary, primary, and secondary treatment followed by chemical addition (metal salt) for phosphorus removal, carbon adsorption, filtration, chlorination, and dechlorination and post aeration. Solids processing consists of gravity sludge thickening, anaerobic digestion, centrifuge dewatering, lime addition and land application.

So appropriate don't you think?

A lot more than you might think Ein.
I am guessing 15k a year at minimum, if this is a city or county work. Benifits are good as well I am guessing. Are you union?
Go Shep!
Watch out for the grease pit, the fumes are dangerously toxic, and don't fall into the airation tank, as they will never fiind the body. Same with the Digester. (The sludge tank)
Be very careful around the chlorine tanks, as poison or explosions are nasty ways to go.

Er...I think it's a shitty job. In more than one way...

But it's better than no job really.

Your job will never be obsolite, or downsized, and isn't as bad as most people think. You will never touch sewage unless there is a serious problem, requiring emergency repairs.
My grandfathr was supervisor in the Simi Valley sewage treatment plant in the late 60s to early 70s, and as a child I visited the place often. It is not nearly as smelly or dirty as most people think.
That was of coarse, before they renamed it "wastewater treatment."

Going to Grandfather's work was educational, as well as fun
The chlorine room was where I learned why they use brass tools. Lighting matches isn't your biggest fire danger. Sparks from electrical switches, (special switch boxes that are airtight) sparks from dropped tools,(brass tools ONLY) and static electric sparks are your danger. (Special boots with ground straps that dragged a bit, and could trip you, like stepping on your own shoelaces)
Common sence power shutoff before doing electrical work is all you need.
This not realy a dangerous job unless you show up for work drunk, or very high on something. Just like shooting at the range. Obey the safety rules, as they are written in blood.
Hmmmmmm.

Also be sure you don't get sucked into a fan while doing electrical repairs...

There's a story going around in my family that someone somehow had that happen to him while repairing an air conditioning system...or something.

Working in a mucky place like that requires some great stomach skills, and if you can do that then props for you. 8)

Sewege treatment plants don't involve guns, so there must be somthing wrong here. Is this place a front for an illegal assault weapons cartel?
