Victoria - Empire Under the Sun Thread
So who's got it? I've been playing as the Netherlands, and up to 1847 I've done fairly well.
Crushed and then annexed Belgium in two quick consecutive treaty-breaking wars, in large part due to judicious mobilization and the aid of about 100,000 Prussian troops on loan from my most valued ally. I also killed off about 100,000 Brits trying to force landings at Amsterdam and Brugges. Limey bastards.
My current mobilization pool is something like 31 divisions, so I'm praying that Prussia gets into a war with France so I can swoop in like a hawk and snatch some border provinces before my economy gets wrecked.
At first I cautiously expanded in Indonesia until I realized that I have a huge native manpower pool and cranked out like 6 native divisions and placed them under the command of capable generals. I've annexed Johore, about half of Siam, Borneo (or was it Brunei?) and have colonized a couple of islands. I also snagged Taiwan off China (thank you, Chinese-resource-draining Opium Wars) and am colonizing Okinawa.
My plans for the future include going crazy on industrial techs in order to get Machine Parts and further industrialize/militarize the Netherlands while expanding in Asia like a motherfucker. Burma is inviting, so I may strip them of numerous provinces and then make them into a satellite state; they'd make a nice buffer state between my colonies and British India.
Also, I'm planning on finishing off Siam and taking over the rest of Southeast Asia (leaving some buffer states to protect me from the scary Chinese dragon). Maybe launch an invasion of Japan in order to compel it to become a satellite before it can industrialize.
Quick colonial wars against Russia and the Ottoman Empire (!) for control of their colonies in east New Guinea are in order. Afterwards comes rapid modernization of the fleet and perhaps an effort concentrated at expanding into China or even British India.

Why would you play as the Netherlands?

1. The Netherlands is filthy rich with the money it has coming in from its Indonesian colonies. It also has a relativly high literacy rate, some basic factories and underlying technology. Alot of potential, and alot of fun.Vympel wrote:Why would you play as the Netherlands?

2. Yes there is. It is one among many; and I believe that there is also one for the writing of the Greek Constitution.
Devolution is quite as natural as evolution, and may be just as pleasing, or even a good deal more pleasing, to God. If the average man is made in God's image, then a man such as Beethoven or Aristotle is plainly superior to God, and so God may be jealous of him, and eager to see his superiority perish with his bodily frame.

Oh, and yes- I own the game. I actually own two copies as the manufacturer accidently stuffed two copies of the game into the box I bought.

I bought it with much excitement, figured out how the ins and outs of the game, and promptly started playing Hearts of Iron again. I love detail, but moreso than other Paradox games, Victoria is slllooooowwww. I've played as Britain, Brazil, the US and Prussia so far but they're all either mind-numbingly frustrating or fairly dull from a gameplay perspective.

I have it. The game gets extremely difficult and boring once one passes about a hundred provinces, though. I tried the Dutch, but I eventually got bored with turning tons of Indonesian pops into soldiers and trying to recover my fleet (which got blown up by Britain). Greece is boring if you can't get steamships to conquer African stuff with. The Two Sicilies was fun, though. I conquered all of Egypt in a 3-year war, then quit after finding out that conquering my way to India would be too easy.

I enjoy it. I've just taken over north Korea in order to have an adequate supply of iron and coal to aid in my industrialization efforts and plan to annex Siam.
I'm salivating over Crusader Kings, though. Hail the Duchy of Toulouse!
