ship numbers

Post by Marcao »

sounds like a reasonable number. I would prefer 25/75/500 but that is a simple nit pick. We still will need a kickass and solid moderator for damage control and what not. As well as firm guidelines for territorial holdings and what not.

Hmm, you know? I think I may just decide to play as the Floaters once more. I liked their concept, and I've had time to think it over pretty extensively since. I may not be jumping on the magitch bandwagon, then.

The Ousters

History:
For a hundred years before the events of the Genocide Wars, those who were called “Floaters” launched their great Arks into space- massive sleeper vessels, crawling across the stars to the edges of the Galaxy. They were part of a massive project to seed the Galaxy with human life, as per the dream held by the Mother Void Church- a galaxy in which every system was inhabited by flourishing human life, life modified to exist in the hard radiation and zero-gravity of deep space.

The Genocide War destroyed Unbound civilization in Known Space. The surviving Unbound, called “floaters” by their earthbound cousins, are little more than pirates and nomads, raiding where they can, settling briefly on asteroid belts or comet clusters to provision or mine before moving on.

Ten years after the end of the Genocide Wars, an Ark arrived at it’s destination, thousands of lightyears outside of explored space, and awoke it’s cargo of living beings. They were a mere million souls, crammed like sardines in the ‘freezers. They took their tools and vessels, turning asteroids into craft and habitats, settling in the asteroid belts and planetary rings of the system at which they had arrived- a system they named Elysium. The Elysian Unbound, with no earthbound competition, expanded exponentially, leaping from system to system. In time, great Clusters formed at the L5 points of various planets. Within sixty years, nearly a dozen systems had been inundated with life- their asteroid belts constantly assaulted for resources, their Oort clouds full of food factories and hydroponics colonies. A new generation of Unbound grew up in this environment, without the steady immigration of earthbound that had beset Known Space floaters, with knowledge of no life but life in zero-gravity.

Then, it arrived- a staggering, shattered collection of asteroid colonies and orbitals, held together with tethers, propelled by ageing, jury-rigged engines and defended by a ragged group of barely-operative warships. The newcomers were the remnants of the great Known Space Cluster known as Zarathrustra- That which had once floated at Earth’s L5 point. They had fled the Genocide Wars, barely escaping, and at great cost of life.

The Unbound viewed the newcomers with awe- and many viewed them with anger. Voices were raised against the forces that had so utterly demolished Known Space’s Floater populations. Some dissented- elders, those who had first awoken on the Ark, those who remembered the Byzantine politics of Known Space.

These voices were not heard.

The armed forces of the Elysian clusters, mere police groups, were disbanded. Instead, the efforts of the largest Clusters were placed towards forging a military force with the intention of re-establishing contact with Known Space, and freeing their shattered brethren.

For ten years, the factories worked, turning asteroids into hulls- hulls for what was, for all intents and purposes, and invasion force.

The lead elements of the Elysian fleet arrived in Known Space a year ago- scouts, spies, and merchants. They have made little contact with Known Space’s Floater pirates, and have busied themselves with evaluating and learning about Known Space.

A month ago, the “Ousters,” as they are called by their Known Space brethren, began their campaign. Like lightening, they attacked and took three systems at the edge of known space. The faceless forms of Ouster marines stormed through the nonaligned systems of Olgasdottir, Markham, and Hudson. They have paused, now, to survey their conquest and examine their situation. Perhaps the Jihad will begin again- or perhaps, understanding can be reached between the Ousters and the people of Known Space.

The Ousters are an enigma to Known Space powers, existing only as legends, conjecture, and the barroom stories of lost merchants. No representatives of the Known Space powers have yet made contact with the Ousters, and only those with close contact and friendship with the Floater nomads would even know that the invaders are at all related with the local space-rats.

Sounds reasonable.

And would there be a limit of fighters, on a fleet base, and a per-ship base?

I don't think the number of fighters is important- a dedicated fleet carrier that holds 100 large fighters would be as potent as a dedicated fleet carrier with a 1000 small drone fighters,

I'll start it up and put it in the Information Thread sticky, but what's the official name of this particular game?

That's already been taken... STGOD 4 it is.

EDIT:
Okay, done... now all I have to do is think of a nation I want to play as.

Story is rather unimportant, interaction between nations is the real key. Rules are rather limited... you make a state with a fleet of the given size (25 large warships, 75 minor, 500 escorts), define it's government, foreign policy, attitude, etc. etc. No powergaming, and when fighting battles called hits are poor form. Really, you can learn as you go along.

DS9 Trek era, only with planetary shields.

Alyrium talked me into joining. I'll see what I can come up with.

Keep in mind that we are lookg at Known Space a century after a truly brutal series of conflicts called the Genocide War. The nations we see today will be built on the remnants of empires such as Durandel, the Asgard, and the Floater Republics. Independant worlds, rogue naval vessels, and pirates are all at large.
