Admiral Leah took a seat.
"I am here represening Jardanian territorial and millitary intrests. The system in question has a orbiting ring of debree between the 7th and 6th planets. While not a propper asteroid field it still containes significant raw materials that we have had out eyes on for some time. We ask....."
From his tone you see that it's NOT a request.
"......that while the planets are yours to do with as you wish. That we be allowed a mining presense in the system for severel months to aquire that which we need."
"Come again," Ambassador Nethington said. He was *not* used to that tome of voice.
"We do not, in any way, like to talked that way. If you want to harness tha system, do it yourselves. You seem quite capable of doing so..."

"Gentlemen, gentlemen," Shelton interrupted. "Please, we can talk this over first." He turned to Admiral Leah. "If you please, I did not catch the name of the system you refer to."
"We do not, in any way, like to talked that way. If you want to harness tha system, do it yourselves. You seem quite capable of doing so..."
"We are more then capable of doing it ourselves, we bring it up here because we do not with the arrival of a large mining fleet with it's millitary escort to arouse any alarm."
"What claim do you have? Your voice tone was very threatening, as if you didnt care about the sovereign rights of other empires. You may have asked, but your tone was not that of a request."
"What claim do we have? 4 months of detailed scouting, a few probes left on the system, and a mining fleet ready to depart as soon as the word is given. As for other soverign nations, well........."
The admiral looks unsure, and it becomes apprant that he's a millitary officer pressed into a diplomats role.
".....we have respect for that, just not as much as you might want."

"Do whatever you want," he spoke in a pleasant voice. "But don't *demand* anything from the Grand Empire. Ever. I am sure this system you are talking about is some backwater planet, with only you might find interest in. So we don't see why you're asking at all..."

"Excuse me. I have not been long in this realm of earthbound, and I do not fully understand your customs. Admiral Leah, are you referring to a system in the region the Hajr has set aside for the Diaspora?"

Duke Claude Peipus, official envoy of the Blood King, entered with his entourage of a half-dozen Orcs. He did not announce or introduce himself, but everyone there could feel his entry. The Arcane Empire ambassador was unmoved, but those with weak wills or without magical predisposition found themselves unable to meet the eyes of the Duke. This was his aura of command.
Without waiting for a reply or looking at anyone at the table, he left his escorts at the door and seated himself at the table. The Duke inclined his head slightly at Malastaral and smiled.
"I am gravely disappointed. Again you have made me unleash my dogs of war."

But don't *demand* anything from the Grand Empire.
The admiral kept a straight face as best he could, but a keen observer could guess that he was thinking rather unflattering throughs about the "Grand" empire.

"He refers to the Cration system, where the Krytosians are colonizing the planets."

<<I knew this diplomacy was a bad idea...>> Nethington thought. <<We should have stayed home, alone and secure.>>
<<It has been decided, and it is the way it is now>> Consensus interjected.
<<I will try, and be patient with these primitives. From what I see, they even live only in their own bodies... How they even made it into space...>>
He smiled at the Admiral. "I'm sure you will understand someday..."

(The Hajr is best described as the military force of the Ousters (though that's not quite accurate-) It presages the spread of the Diaspora, Ouster colonization.)

"Well, mortality such as it is. Medical treatment can theroticaly extend life indefinitly, but most millitary officers kick the bucket sooner or later."
"Mister Ambassador, I think that mortality is in fact the very basis of the superiority of man. Certainly, our intellect makes us powerful, but what is power without drive? Our mortality, and the organic instincts which come with it, is the finest source of drive. A brief life burns brightly."

Veithan Space, Veitha System
Veitha III, Intelligence Directorate
The Veitha system was the namesake of the Empire and was undeniably its heart. The system had two colonized worlds, and a third was currently in the process of being shaped and molded into a state that could more adequately support the wishes of the Empire. Veitha III, was the heart and soul of the sprawling star nation and held within the core of the administrative apparatus. The world was defended passionately, planetary shields and orbital defenses whispering threats to any that would violate its space. At the moment however, the defensive apparatus around the planet was the furthest thought in the mind of Jon Cameron, director of Veithan intelligence.
Jon Cameron was not the most impressive looking member of his people, his build contrasted poorly with the muscled and toned bodies of the royal guards, his face was clean shaven and nearly always host to a frown. His hair was long, coming to rest at mid back and his facial features, including his eyes seemed to tear away at emotion in the room. His gaze was usually more than enough to unnerve most of his visitors, and the fact that he was one of the most powerful minds within the Empire did not help matters. Nonetheless, the Director was passionate about his work and at the moment he silently awaited the arrival of a member of the grand senate.
The director did not like politicians but he understood that in order for things to work well, they were a necessary evil. Nonetheless, most politicians tended to irritate him with their constant nagging and never ending desire for answers. Most of the time there were answers he could not give, and none of them could understand the sacrifices that he had taken for his nation and people. His job was to keep the Empire safe, no matter what the cost. The idea that he had a multitude of enemies pleased him primarily because none of his enemies could know his face, could understand why he had done what he did. The mental presence of the politician was felt before she had entered the wing that housed his office. It was his gift, and thus he settled to quietly admire the mind that approached him. If he had been in the mood, he could have easily breached her defenses and convinced her mind that she wanted to go somewhere else. The politician was only a P4 and he was a prime, but he did not take any liberties. He would answer her questions, suffer through her presence and then he would let her go. After that was done, he could concentrate on the tasks at hand.
The politician finally arrived, pleasantries exchanged with a gentle brush of their minds before she got straight to the point.
”The operation that was carried out against the Masashi was a bit too direct was it not? The file says that there were over thirty seven dead, including four children and eight women. Is that information accurate Director?”
Jon Cameron paused for a moment, arching a brow as if considering the information offered to him by the woman opposite him. “The information is accurate senator. It had to be messy in order for it to be believable. As you are no doubt aware the Masashi ruling party is not exactly subtle, and if we were to blame the crown princess behind this attack on the crown prince, we had to be inept ourselves.”
The Senator blinked for a moment and considered the words of the director, her eyes watching those of the director for only a moment before looking away. “Nonetheless, was that not a bit…harsh? Surely you could have found another way…”
The director sighed softly and decided to skip the bullshit and get to the heart of the matter. “It was a tragedy senator, but it was what had to be done. Leave the morality involved to those such as me, these are the decisions I was trained and am paid for to make. Consider this, now that the crown prince is dead along with all of his immediate successors and the crown princess is implied in the attack, the enemies of the current regime, -OUR- enemies will be in disarray for years if not decades. That was a small price to pay for thirty seven deaths. You will remember that Lilandra foresaw this, and that my operation had the approval of the council including the president.” His mental words ceased for a moment, letting every thought sink in before he continued. “If we had not taken this opportunity, we would have seen the Masashi regime implode within six months, and our foothold in their space would have been weakened substantially. The other alternative, was to have dropped an ASU in the planet and leveled the compound were crown prince resides. The casualty count in that scenario would have been well over three hundred and it would not have been as elegant a solution. No senator, this was the best choice all things concerned. Now, are there any more questions?”
The senator hesitated for a moment, her face slightly flushed from the intense mental contact that talking to the director generally aroused. “I see.” She paused for a moment, her eyes closing before she shook her head and glanced at him once more. “No, that will be all. I thank you for your time Director. I am sure that we will see each other again…soon.” The senator nodded her head and stood, walking out of the office moments later. The director shook his head and sighed, he had no doubt of that. Still, he did not allow himself the time to relax. Another group of predictions had arrived from the Black Tower, a part of him curious as to what Lilandra saw in the future of the Empire.
Neutral Space
Space Diplomatic Station Alpha
The Veithan representative moved gracefully down one of several hallways within the station, talking occasionally with various members of lesser powers and nations whose presence had caught the eye of the Empire. She was escorted by two members of the Night Lords, a man and a woman whose facial expressions were for all intensive purposes expressionless masks. The Empire was not terribly interested in melodramatics and thus they had arrived aboard a single vessel, a cruiser the CNV Fortune namesake for her class.
Although the delegation was here purely as a gesture of good will, they did keep an eye out on the others about them. It was the polite thing to do, and sometimes seeing what was not said was far more important than hearing what was. The various theatrics were food and drink were conjured up out of the air was noted and appreciated, eyebrows arched before words were exchanged between the various delegation members. Some of the members of the delegation were acting like children with toys, but that was not their concern. They were here to be, and eventually to approach the like minded or those that earn a semblance of respect from their surroundings so dominated by fools.
When the representative of the so-called Diaspora made its appearance three sets of eyes naturally followed. The delegation seeming to glide closer towards the group in order to better ascertain what exactly they had in mind. The holographic projector was activated, the information noted and appreciated. The ambassador smiled thinly, especially at the idea that a new group of people had claimed space but not to worry, because their intentions were peaceful! Peace was transient, and only existed when both sides understood that they would suffer too much in war. The information about the territory claimed by the so called Diaspora was sent via neural implants to the CNV Fortune, where it was passed along towards those whose job it was to analyze the information.
When one of the assembled ambassadors spoke, she waited for the moment that politeness dictated before speaking herself. Her words crisp and clear, even if verbal communications were not the language of her people. “The Veithan Empire acknowledges your claim in that space, and notes your so called peaceful intentions. We hope that future dealings with your people will be as direct and straight forward.” Claiming territory was easy, it was holding it that was hard but she did not say that aloud. There was no need, any representatives within the station understood that truth. Or so she hoped, naivete was out of style in the galaxy.
The further exchanges in hear general area where met with a wince, at the very aggressive tone of one and the predictable response of the other. It was a pity that not enough of these people understood the power of the silk glove. She sighed softly, glancing toward her guards and beginning to step to the side, past a door and into a semi-secluded spot with a view of space. Being around enough of these people was enough to bring discomfort. She already had a good idea of what her report would say…

The admiral pulled a small handheld device out of his pocket and flipped it open.
"Commander?"
The box chripped. "Yes Admiral?"
"The word is given."
"Yes Admiral."

Shelton cocked an eyebrow. "Odd that you should say that. Our troops' training is expensive; humanitarian concerns aside, simply throwing their lives away is a waste of all that training," he remarked in surprise.
'The only way they could make such a setup work is by maintaining a very large and very poorly trained military,' he thought to himself, filing that fact away for his report.
