It's not "weird" at all. It's the majority and leadership of the members of your religion shoving their beliefs down everybody else's throats. One of the interesting comments I saw on this resurgence of puritanism in America was on CNN where they mentioned a politician commenting that they justify these actions because of the fear that American TV will "degenerate toward Europe's level" in terms of sexual liberation.

Is Europe so reviled in the US that it can be used rhetorically as the end of a slippery slope?

Of course. It's a place where social programs work, people aren't persecuted for not obeying some 2000 year old book, and where things are, by and large, not sucking too bad.
