Why is it that I begin EVERY STGOD with an invasion? Jesus, it's like some sort of weird invasion fetish.

You'd be hard-pressed to find a feifdom without at least a reasonable space defense force- all the minor powers without them have been conquered. You'll need a significant deployment of warships to handle any world with decent industry, and at least a cruiser squadron for even a fairly primitive world- Note that I had 2 Dreadnought equivalents and an unknown number of attack carriers, just to conquer an NPC system.

I think he's referring to me, actually. Listen Laz, just because I'm using mass guns instead of energy weapons doesn't make me 20th century. :P

Mass Guns are completely reasonable weapons at any techlevel. One o the best ways to do gigatons of damage is to hurl chunks off iron at your enemy at c-fractional speeds. Be proud o your railguns!

Yeah, so insteasd of having a half-ton of iron impact your city at .6 c, you have a half-ton off iron plasma impacting your city at .6 c. Either way, you lose.

I don't know if we're using exact figures, but I believe we're moving about as fast as Star Trek warp.

Let's say a week's FTL transit from one end of Known Space to the other? That'd make the region roughly the size of the Federation.

Yeah, fair enough, so, let's say...

hmm, calculator out: 11 LY an hour for a heavy capital ship at cruising speed. Vessels pushing their engines, or smaller vessels, could go faster.

Who says railguns can't bombard a planet? Just wait till *one* of my cruiser starts lobbing 20000 MTs per minute of pure metal death into your homeworld's atmosphere at high c-fractional speeds!
Though that would basically deplete all my ammo. Oh well, then I'll just start tossing Paladins onto your surface and watch them carve up your civilian population. [/endevilpowergamingrant]

If it's not too late to join:

Richim System Authority

History: As expansion continued outward, explorers discovered a system with eight planets, two capable of supporting human life, and three more with considerable mineral resources. However, none of the planets had intelligent life. After several centuries, emigration from other star systems had brought 100 billion people to the system. One quarter of the workforce was employed in businesses related to mining the minerals, leading to the formation many powerful corporations. This led to the formation of the Richim System Authority, a governmental body uniting the system, making it easier to enforce regulations, as well as defending the system from insurgents.

Inhabited planets:
Richim 3: Government center, fifteen percent of mining operations on planet.
Population: 16 billion
Capital: Orcsis City, population 50 million
Richim 4: Other habitable planet, home to many of the miners on uninhabitble planets. Eight percent of mining operations on planet.
Population: 54 billion
Capital: Richim Hub, population 4 billion
Richim 5: Uninhabitable. Most miners live on Richim 4, although some live in underground habitats. 37 percent on mining activity on planet.
Population: 7 billion
Capital: Caromunn Habitat, population 75 million
Richim 6: Also uninhabitable. Due to distance, a higher percentage of the miners live in habitats. 32 percent of mining activity on planet.
Population: 14 bilion
Capital: Erfion Habitat, population 100 million
Richim 7: Uninhabitable. Almost all miners live in habitats. 8 percent of mining activity on planet.
Population: 9 billion
Capital: Mancore Habitat, population 32 million

Government: The Richim System Authority is mostly Capitalistic, with regulations to keep companies from forming monopolies at the expense of others. However, they do not reach far, as although there are thousands of mining companies, half of all operations are carried out by eight. Representation is determined by a Parliament of 5000 seats, which are determined according to planet population. Several privatae companies and government organizations are exploring outside the system in hopes of settling new planets and expanding their power. In the case of new planets being settled, more seats will be added to Parliament.

With the exception of exploring undiscovered areas of the galaxy, the Richim System Authority is isolated from other systems, as it is capable of governing itself.

Armed forces:

5 capital ships (1030 meters long)
25 Cruisers (525 meters long)
250 escorts (40 meters long)

Technology: Whatever the hell is standard at the time, I guess.[/i]
