Drumming or grinding noise in my box

Post by Alan Bolte »

Just heard it this morning. I think it's new, but then I don't listen to my computer too closely. It isn't loud, but I don't have to bend from my chair to hear it. Any idea what's causing it?

Could be your CPU fan, when the bearings go in it they can make a grinding noise.

It seems to have stopped now. How odd.

Fans can have on/off patterns of grinding sounds. I've noticed that when the fans make that sound, they go slower than when they do when not making the sound. So it's best that you figure out which fan is causing it... and if it is slowing down during the grinding noises, have it replaced.

If you cannot explain it, then the noise is obviously divine intervention. Praise!

What's that Mikey? Jesus fell down the heatsink? He's getting ripped to shreds by the fanblades?

Only through the agonizing death of micro-Jesus in the fanblades of the CPU cooler can you find salvation for your sins.

No amount of gorey Micro-Jesus death can atone me. On the other hand, his itty bitty savior bloody might improve cooling.

That's the CIA's R254AC recording device. Make sure you don't open the case, or it'll self-destruct.

This is actually a very simple fix and only requires some 3-in-1 oil, an exacto blade, and 2 minutes of your time. Just use the exacto blade to pry back the sticker on the back of the fan just enough so that you uncover a rubber cap in the middle. Then take the tip of the blade and pop the seal on the rubber cap. Put in a couple drops of 3-in-1 onto the spindle (just enough that it gets wet, don't fill it up!) and give the blades a few turns with your fingers to work the oil in. Then give it a couple more drops for good measure and put the cap back on, wipe away any excess with a tissue and put the sticker back the way it was.

You're done! You have no idea how much longer you can run that fan just by spending 2 mintues of your time re-oiling it.

It's one of the fans in your computer. Either your CPU fan, or one of your other cooler fans, or your power supply fan. Turning off your computer, removing the offending fan from your computer, and spraying it with a non-oily solvent (such as brake parts cleaner, available at your local auto parts store or hardware store,) will clean out the dust and grime that's clogging up the fan and making it run slower.
