RPGers: Do you know 'Shadow Hearts?'
Some salesman at EB around Christmastime told me that the game Shadow Hearts is the best RPG that people aren't playing--he told me a bit about the storyline and the mature nature of the game, and it sounded pretty damn cool to me. Looked up some reviews and they look promising too.
Anyone here played it who'd like to share their opinions, thoughts, yadda yadda? Please?
Thanks.

Pretty good game from what I saw, very unique world, style. No voice acting but that's okay, it does have the most kick ass opening FMV you'll ever see
History? I love history! First, something happens, then, something else happens! It's so sequential!! Thank you first guy, for writing things down!

What kind of mature nature we talkin' here? Call of Cthulhu dark, gritty type of mature? Explores the very nature of depraved evil a la a campaign using the Book of Vile Darkness? Or mature as in the Book of Erotic Fantasy, a product that really serves absolutely no purpose in your average RPG because just rolling dice for it is exceedingly unsatisfying?

Fun game...a bit wacky in speech and has alternate endings that aren't easy or intiuitve to get. The interesting part is what they've taken from history. It technically is the sequel of a relatively unknown PSX RPG called Koudelka.
Also it's maturity is much more tongue in cheek. Has a bit of a kinky twist to it all and pretty funny to read the many sexual innuedos.
If you want help on it...just holla. I helped write a FAQ for it long ago. The game has a few odd branching points but is fun.
The only thing to get used to is it requireas some getting used to the "Ring system"
Also it does have VAing...just not much as current RPGs.

I think my local Electronics Boutique might be able to get it for me--the guy talked like it was a regular staple at their store. We'll have to see... I think I want it.Ghost Rider wrote:Yah...also rather hard to find.Zaia wrote:So it sounds like it'd be worth the $20 or whatever to buy a used copy of it. Yah?

That's cool...it was a low run game is only reason it's wee hard to find.Zaia wrote:I think my local Electronics Boutique might be able to get it for me--the guy talked like it was a regular staple at their store. And if for nothing else the wonderfully effeminette guy who upgrades your weapons is hilarious around men...ah the inneudo would make most blush

I'll note that my question was never answered. Answer it or I'll hit on you. Don't think I won't.

It's an extremely good game, just don't expect much out of the non-CG graphics or the limited amount of voice acting. The atmosphere and characters are outstanding though, the CG is beautiful and the storyline is downright facinating at times. They also are working on a sequel (Shadow Hearts 2), and there is a prequel to this game (Koudelka) that weaves some story elements in, but it isn't necessary to play in order to pick up the storyline.
Oh, and I should mention that there are two endings to this game, the "good" and the "bad" ending. I suggest that you read up on how to get the "good" ending ahead of time since the solution is totally non-intuative.

But I don't know; I haven't played it myself! So that's not fair!Rogue 9 wrote:I'll note that my question was never answered. Answer it or I'll hit on you. Don't think I won't.
Thanks for the info, Kernel--I'm not too worried about the non-CG graphics since I still play some games on my old consoles. It sounds like it would make a nice contrast in styles to FF, which I love, but...well, something different is nice sometimes.

I too love FF and I agree that it's a nice change of pace. Do you know the general story? I'm not giving away anything to tell you that it's set in the 20th century before WWII, except that things like magic, demons and the like actually exist. Very cool atmosphere. And the graphics aren't bad, they're just not the visual orgy of the FF games.Zaia wrote: Thanks for the info, Kernel--I'm not too worried about the non-CG graphics since I still play some games on my old consoles. I don't know much about the game, except that the overall mood is kind of dark instead of incredibly cheery and bright like most RPGs (which I think is cool), and that's it's less G-rated (the salesman at EB said it was 'rather perverted,' at which point my face lit up and he laughed). I read a couple of reviews too, which basically all said that the game was fantastic in a different sort of way, if a little bit hard to get used to at the beginning. The Kernel wrote:I too love FF and I agree that it's a nice change of pace. So basically I think that you guys have confirmed my belief that it will indeed be an interesting game to play. Thank you!
