LIBERAL RADIO NET TAKEN OFF AIR IN LOS ANGELES, CHICAGO AFTER ONLY TWO WEEKS
After just two weeks on the air, Air America Radio, the fledgling liberal talk-radio network featuring Al Franken and Janeane Garofalo, appears to have encountered serious cash-flow problems.
The CHICAGO TRIBUNE is developing a story, insiders tell DRUDGE, on how the network was pulled off the air this morning in Chicago and Los Angeles, the network's second- and third-largest markets, because, the owner of both stations said, the network bounced a check and owes him more than $1 million! A charge the network strongly denies... Developing...

Wow, I'm actually kind of surprised. I wasn't really expecting it to be much of a success, but I wasn't expecting it to go belly-up after a couple of weeks, either.

I was hoping they would be more fiscally responsible than Salon.
"Right now we can tell you a report was filed by the family of a 12 year old boy yesterday afternoon alleging Mr. Michael Jackson of criminal activity. A search warrant has been filed and that search is currently taking place. Mr. Jackson has not been charged with any crime. We cannot specifically address the content of the police report as it is confidential information at the present time, however, we can confirm that Mr. Jackson forced the boy to listen to the Howard Stern show and watch the movie Private Parts over and over again."

The irony is quite humerous. They're always blaming the economic deficiencies on Bush, yet they can't pay the bills to keep their station on air. Heheheh
Its hardly inappropriate to accuse Bush of stupid economics when he deliberately is fiscally irresponsible or depresses the economy with more unnecessary war.

A claim bouncing around radio forums right now is that Arthur Liu at Multicultural Radio Broadcasting, Inc. stole money from Air America. The claim is that MRBI double-charged Air America for the same station, that Air America said Liu couldn't cash their checks until the matter's settled, and that Liu then took them of the air.
Disclaimer: Radio forums thrive on industry rumors.
In any case, the big quote so far is from Air America chairman Evan Cohen in the Chicago Tribune. In response to Liu's story, Cohen says, "That is an outright lie."
The Majority Report's blog says MRBI is using the Chicago station as leverage while trying to get a sweeter deal on the Los Angeles station. Essentially, they're trying to get more money because Air America's been more successful than expected.
Also, in an indication that Air America is nowhere near failing, they're actually adding new stations.
Currently, Air America is taking up the entire top half of The Drudge Report. You've got to admit, for an upstart radio network, Air America sure knows how to make headlines.

Well, I don't have time to monitor the political affiliation of everyone on the board, so I just assumed... whatever apologies may be in order are offered.

I actually had hoped they might stay on the air and actually see if the country would support their views on the issues. Oops guess that didn't happen.

Liu was trying to rip Air America off. He got a check from them months before the startup to hold the air space. Then he turned around and resold the air space. Air America recently found out, and demanded to be recompensed for this. They cancelled the recent check to Liu, until he cleared up the swindle. Liu kicked them off the station, then did the same at the other station he owned. Air America is currently bringing suit over being locked out in the middle of the contract. -- the position from Air America

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A New York judge ordered the owner of two radio stations on Thursday to put the 2-week-old, liberal radio network known as Air America back on the air.
MultiCultural Radio Broadcasting Inc, which owns radio stations in Chicago and Los Angeles, pulled the plug on Air America on Wednesday. MultiCultural's owner, Arthur Liu, told the Chicago Tribune the radio network "bounced a check" and was in default.
Air America, which leases radio stations in 16 cities, filed a complaint in New York State Supreme Court demanding it be restored to the air and compensated.
Judge Marilyn Diamond issued a temporary restraining order on the condition that Air America post a $156,000 bond. The judge will hold a hearing on the dispute on Monday.
"We won the first round. We'll be back on the air sometime before the end of the day on Friday," Air America Chairman Evan Cohen said.
Liu did not return calls seeking comment.
"Arthur Liu received a clear message in court," Cohen said. "Temper tantrums are not the way to conduct business."
Cohen said he purchased two months of airtime on KBLA in Santa Monica, California, before Air America's March 31 launch, but the station owner resold the time to a Spanish-language programer.
Cohen said the two sides had been in discussions until Tuesday, when talks broke down and the station owner locked out Air America employees from KBLA and Chicago's WNTD.
Air America, which features a program hosted by comedian Al Franken, was launched to counter right-wing hosts who dominate daytime talk radio. Los Angeles and Chicago were two of Air America's largest markets.
Tell it to da judge, Liu
