Codec trouble

Post by Comosicus »

I have a codec conflict in my computer.

After installing WindowsXP a week ago I've put ffdshow and AC3. But some of the movies that used to run with the same codecs on Win98 didn't work. I tried to put DivX5.1.1 then KLCodec pack, after uninstalling the previous codecs. Things just got worse. Registry entries for the uninstalled codecs still remained and it's a real mess now.

I tried even to remove the video codecs from the Sound and Multimedia section in Control Panel. But after reboot there were all back.

Any ideas on how I can remove them without a clean reinstall?

You've borked your computer, probably. Codec packs can be mad mojo.

This is one of the codecs that came into KL codec Pack and caused havoc.

After ANOTHER reinstall of windows XP with SP1 I've put ffdshow BEFORE downloading any updates from Microsoft. ... and it worked. Of course, first thing I've done was stopping automatic update and creating a restore point. It does not show Xvid movies properly, but with a little "restore point creation / uninstall ffdshow / put xvid codec / watch movie / roll back to restore point" combo I should manage everything. Although I remember there were slightly minor problems with DivX 5+ movies, as ffdshow pack only has DivX 5.02.

But at least I can see most of the movies again.

Which ffdshow build are you using? I found that the 5-23 build works best for me, especially for Xvid encodes. None of the newer ones seem to work.

Try downloading the 2003-5-23 alpha build and use that instead.

Thanks ... no major difference as I can tell, but at least it's newer.
