Alarms triggered again, across the system.
"Command! More vessels, incoming from the system's edge! Enemy ECM is strong, but it looks like six, maybe seven capital ships!"

The heavy units of the Ouster fleet had coasted in from outside sensor range, engines off, on a balistic course. Now, they were lighting off their Kincaid drives and diving in-system. Their target was clearly the group of Jardanian reinforcements. The Jardanian commander would have only seconds to react before he found his vessel under attack.

Meanwhile, the Ouster raiding squadron rocked as the beam swept across them. Since, in space, even a tight formation is thousands of kilometers across, the strike cruisers took only light damage. Some of the escorts, lightly shielded as they were, had already taken damage from the planet's gun batteries and succumbed to the waves of power. A dozen torpedo frigates broke appart, their poorly armored forms disintegrating as their shields failed.

The crippled SD limped at 1/20th normal speed towards the orbiting stations, savefly out of the fight.

The massive swarm of destroyers took up station between the planet and the outsides fleet, inside the range of their defensive guns, while what fast-attack fighters had survived the inital assult swarmed up from the surfase.

"Be ready for them to try to 'port inside our range, fire, and then retreat before we can counter attack. If they try, blast them."

The commander looked at the tatical display.

"Heh, classic seige warfare...........your move."

Adar Krell read over Faran Tor's advertisement, nodded in satisfaction, and keyed it into his terminal. Seconds later, it was broadcast to all the major powers. He leaned back in his chair and took a deep breath. This arms convention could be a big opportunity for the Combine.

There was a knock on his office door, and Trilla Nor, the chief Combine scientist entered. "You wanted to see me?" she asked.

"Yes, I wanted to check on the status of the Shield Depletion Ray. Will it be ready for the upcoming arms conference?"

"Yes, of course. The prototypes are fully checked out and we are sending the plans to the Sirian arms manufactures. We will have several working models in time for the conference, and shortly thereafter we will be ready to begin retooling some of our own ships."

"Excellent. I think all the Titans could use these, and maby a few Blue-Collars."

"Excellent idea, sir."

"Have you prepared your team to escort Faran to the conference?"

"Of course. We have some of our top men and women ready to go and see what technologies the other powers have been able to develop."

"Good. Thank you, that will be all." Trilla Nor turned and walked quickly out of Krell's office, the door hissing shut behind her. Krell turned back to his monitor and began to work. A big opportunity for the Combine, indeed.

The Ouster fleet flickered out of Kincaid drive, bleeding gouts of kinetic energy into hyperspace as the vessels settled into STL speeds. The Dominance of Primates and the Pinnacle of Evolution burned their torchdrives, while thirteen Strike Cruisers settled into formation around them. Swarms of escorts orbited the larger craft, linking point defense computers with the larger vessels.

The fleet's four attack carriers hung back, their fighter bays disgorging groups of interceptors and bombers. Four hundred bombers and an equal number of escorting fighters streaked ahead of the Ouster fleet. The planet's defensive fighter squadrons, faced with four carriers worth of attack craft, were only able to destroy fifty bombers before being hunted down by the swirling mass of Ouster interceptors.

The attack craft began their runs on the fleet above Belarus. Their fire was focused on the defending Frigate swarm- the Ouster commander recognized that the small craft would be hard targets for the fixed-mount heavy weapons on the War Cluster's cataphractoi and strike cruisers.

Concurrent with the fighter strike, the Ouster fleet began firing torpedoes. Of the 150 assorted escorts in the 3rd war cluster, fifty were of the Vampire class- each one built around a spinal mount Kincaid torpedo tube. The first volley from the Ouster fleet contained a mere hundred torpedoes, but the Kincaid projectiles were hard targets for point defense to track.

Explosions began to rip across the Jardanian fleet. They were outnumbered heavily, and the Ouster capital ships would soon be in beam weapon range.

-ooc- Laz, you are screwed. Almost a third of my fleet is here.... And it's Ousters, not Outsiders.

The Dwarves continued to dig in the iron mine, and had just recieved an order for enough iron to begin the shaping of an 8th fleet

It would take a significant amount of time to get that much iron with pickaxe and move earth. However turning it into other metals and enchanting, then shaping it into a ship would take only a few days.

The Sixth fleet having been dispatched from the COG homeworld to assist in the growing crisis, Lurched out of the astral plane right on top of the Colony at Xerxes Beta 2. Just out of the range of its defensive weapons

It sent an illusory image of the dreadnoughts captain to the Governors home.

" Attention Jardanian Confederacy. I speak for the Arcane Empire. You have no claim to the Edean(sp) system. As it was agreed that the Ousters have claim to several systems of their choosing. By not holding to this agreement you are in breach of treaty. An illegal act which must be dealt with.

We may be outside your weapons range, but the wonderful thing about Kinetic weapons is that we need only hit your planet, not target it.. and Momentum has this tendancy to not dissipate in vacuum. If you get my meaning. You WILL comply"

The orders came through on Orodan. The military factories geared up and began working three shifts. Orders for three more battle stations for Pinnacle had come in, and they were wanted on the double. Parts began to churn out and were transferred to the orbital shipyards...

The factory ships had just finished completeing their new workload; a brand new set of drone cruisers. Because of the rising hostilities in the surrounding regions, the 13 decided to go ahead and begin a small military buildup. They couldnt stay hidden forever, and if they were found, it would be more prudent to have some firepower to fall back on. Reconnisance was stepped up, and a new stealth field was deployed on the surface, hiding the mining complex from view.

President announces defense treaty with Myheri Republic

In a move that had been expected by analysts, the President of the Empire announced a treaty between the Myheri Republic and the Empire. The treaty is a defense treaty, where the Empire pledges to render assistance to the Republic if it is to be invaded by a foreign nation. The exact details of the treaty are not as of yet known, but it is believed that the perimeter and outer systems of the Myheri Republic will be jointly patrolled by Empire and Republican forces. A permanent base of operations shall be established in Myheri space in order to support Veithan forces in that area of space. Other than the announcement of the treaty, the president touched upon the state of the union and various civil projects which his administration is currently engaged in. The President reiterated his commitment to galactic peace and assured the Veithan populace that these trying times have not changed the focus of his administration.

Veithan shipyards near full capacity

Due to the increased demand in the last few weeks and previous orders that are only now nearing completions, a large percentage of Veithan private and military shipyards are nearing full capacity. One of the most active of these is the Zenith Technologies shipyards in the Marasi system. The shipyards are believed to be currently working on the next generation vessels for the Myheri Republic’s navy. These cruiser sized vessels are believed to form the core orders for the Republic, and are being worked on around the clock. Over five other local fiefdoms and minor star nations have also displayed interest in procuring Veithan designs for their next-generation needs. The Veithan naval yards have for the most part been relatively quiet, although it is believed that the last ten “Black Wind” class battle-cruisers are near the end of their production. When these vessels are complete, the Veithan Navy will be once more at full strength. Since the mothballing of most of the elderly “Vanquisher” class Battle-cruisers, the Navy’s core of cruisers has been slightly under-strength. This is apparently a situation that the Veithan Navy will no longer tolerate.

Horton’s ship arrived at the station without incident, the five men from the Nashtar taskforce reached the small conference room just as the other representatives were exiting the holosuite, they were finished watching Megaron’s sales pitch, it was the same thing over and over again, they had gotten the message. Millze Koranga greeted them cordially, and was about to begin a short speech he had written to bring his new guests up-to-date.
He glanced out the panoramic window; his face turned pale.

A massive Baeloaren Ship of the Line, the Infallible, spilled into real space not far from the Megaron destroyer and powered its sub light engines up. The relatively small corporate destroyer tried to pull out of orbit, but it was too late, the invisible fingers of the Infallible’s tractor beam reached out and grabbed it, a faint blue haze enveloped the ship, it struggled momentarily before submitting.

The Megaron Industries logo being displayed by the conference room hologram projector flickered and was replaced by the harsh face of Commodore Kreel Vinlaanah, “This is Commodore Vinlaanah of CSL Infallible, Megaron Industries presence here is an act of treason against the Commonwealth and will not be tolerated!” the face now shifted towards the aliens, he glared at them momentarily. “Aliens, please remain on the station until Commonwealth Security Forces have taken the traitors into custody, I am dispatching an official diplomat to the station, the Homeworld Senate thanks you for your patience in these matters.” he turned back to Koranga, whose face was completely white, “Go ahead and run Koranga; my gunners could certainly use the entertainment!” the hologram faded and was replaced by the Megaron Industries logo.

Within minutes two shuttles docked and four Order Police Soldiers walked into conference room, without a word two of them grabbed Miles Koranga and dragged him to the elevator. Seconds later the elevator returned with an old, friendly looking Baeloaren male carrying a small, but ornate cane. “Greetings my friend, I trust you have been well treated”, his voice was warm and comforting. “I want to apologize for this ordeal, but rest assured it won’t happen again. I am Tacer Drealaan, the official representative of the Baeloaren Commonwealth.” he paused for a moment to allow the aliens a moment to take in all that he had said. “Before I continue, please contact your ships and let them know that there are no problems down here, I would hate for this to cause any unnecessary damage. If you’re still interested, I have been authorized to open diplomatic talks here and now, unless any of you would prefer to postpone such talks until a later date, or at some other location.” while the aliens pondered the situation, a Baeloaren worker went around and handed out data pads containing a wealth of useful knowledge about the Baeloaren Commonwealth.

Captain Horton took his datapad, a puzzled expression on his face. "Well, this certainly has been an odd mission. We came here to investigate what seemed to be garbage signals; a bunch of random transmissions. We get here and find a space station and destroyer where there were none several years ago when the Astrological Survey came through here. And now we find that our hosts are traitors to their government. I must say, I've never had a tour so unusual in all my years of service."

"Reroute emergency power to the point defense lasers! Link targeting computers and form up!"

The swarm of destroyers formed a sphere, and with their targeting computers acting in unison. With the output of their targeting lasers more then doubled, and their combined fire tactics, they formation became an inpenibirble wall. Distroying any missles or fighters unlucky enough to come within PDL range.

"It looks like the fourth fleet has completely eradicated the last of the resistance from the system, and our presence is no longer required admiral conner. When do we ship out for Krytos?"

"We don't, at least not yet anyway. The emperor has deployed us to assist Arcane Empire forces laying seige to the Edean system"

"Are we really going to get involved in another war?"

"It was bound to happen sooner or later, the Jardanians respect nothing but force, so we'll show them what the empire can do."

"What about the colonies in the Cration system?"

"I understand that the first of the orbital defense platforms went online a few days ago, and an additional four patrol destroyers are being dispatched to the system to reinforce the patrols. The system should be safe."

"Tell all fleet units to form up on our position and prepare to jump."

"At once admiral"

Several minutes later, the Third fleet jumped twards the Edean system.

We would like to demonstrate a number of personal weapons, including the type-99 plasma rifle, the type-200 plasma cannon, and the mark four fusion grenade.

Spaceborne weapons systems we intend to demonstrate include the Mark five heavy fusion cannon (OOC: Don't worry MK 1 STGODers, I don't intend to repeat my mistake) and the new Ulysses anti fighter missile system.

"We are aware of, and took place in, no such treaty. We declared war, and occupied this territory without help from any coalition. It is our decision what we do with this territory, and it is not yours to claim."

We will send a diplomatic staff as soon as possible.
We have also set aside a portion of one of our space stations to function as diplomatic district. You may set up an embassy space there.

The Ouster fleet smashed into the Jardanian formation like a hammer-blow. The spherical formation the Jardanians had adopted provided little extra protection from missiles, while placing many of the Superdreadnought's escorts in poor firing positions.

The fleet's two Cataphractoi did what they were designed to do- They dove straight towards the Jardanian superdreadnought. Space-time rippled and twisted as their wave-motion cannon fired. Eight beams of distorted reality reached out from the heavy guns, releasing gouts of energy from hyperspace against the Jardanian warship's shields. The fleet's strike cruisers opened fire as well, their spinal-mount lasers discharging megaton after megaton of firepower into the stricken warship. More WMC blasts played over the vessel.

Kincaid torpedoes, fired at point-black range, erupted through the swirling mass of Jardanian frigates. The Jardanian fleet would succumb rapidly to N2 laws.

The fleet's bevy of "Knife"-class frigates spread out. The small craft dueled with the Jardanian frigates, engaging in a deadly dance. The capable Ouster crews put their craft through dizzying maneuvers, whirling about as their laser batteries transfixed damaged frigates. Occasionally, a vessel's shields would fail, and Ouster antimatter cannon would reach out and bathe the unprotected hulls.

Explosions erupted across the Jardanian superdreadnought. The Pinnacle of Evolution fired her full forewards weaponry into the Jardanian warship's aft section. The craft's shields began to buckle...

With a massive explosion, the Super-Drednaught exploded.

However, while the heavy capital ships were busy attacking the crippled super ship, the sphere took the chance to deal some damage. With the sphere formation mostly protecting them from the missles, the turned their plasma weapons on the two Cataphractoi, hoping to at least recover part of the tactical loss from the SD.

Cataphracts were less well protected than most capital vessels in Known Space, but they were still heavy capital ships- and the light weaponry of the already tattered Jardanian escort screen would take time to wear down their defenses.

More importantly, the Jardanian escort craft were holding position. Had they been maneuvering, they would have been hard targets for the Ouster capital ship foreward guns- but as was, they were stationary targets. The choice to maintain formation turned out to be suicidally stupid. Streams of fire transfixed one escort after another as the fleet's thirteen Strike Cruisers turned their forewards guns on the small craft.

In minutes, the fight would be over.
