They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong
But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red

John Ashcroft finds the site, and proceeds to invade Canada with the Delaware National Guard to shut it down on the grounds of 'moral indecency'. ![Wink ](./images/smilies/icon_wink.gif)

I actually meant our combined sexinesses would make the site implode, what with threads like my Adonis thread in A&P and all...

The worst-case realistic scenario is some kind of horrible internecine soap-opera conflict that drives people away in disgust, and we have a pretty good record of finding a way to shut down soap operas; some kind of action is usually taken within a matter of days in order to stop a burgeoning soap opera from running out of control. We will allow people to flame each other while arguing about some kind of abstract subject, but when it starts devolving to vendettas, we generally try to shut it down.
In the long term, if interest in the board were to die down, the costs associated with running it would also decrease commensurately with the traffic, so the board would stay up in one form or another; it just wouldn't get traffic any more. Eventually, if it became a ghost town many years into the future, I could foresee that it might be converted into a static webpage format. Our words of wisdom and depravity will live on.

Webboards haven't really been around in any meaningful way for very a long time. How does a popular webboard die?

The reason for its existence might die (for example, if webboards had been around in the 1970s there might have been a lot of Battlestar Galactica webboards which would have languished after the show was cancelled).PrinceofLowLight wrote:Webboards haven't really been around in any meaningful way for very a long time. Alternatively, I've heard of cases (as I mentioned before) where there was a massive political conflict which had the effect of dominating all discussions on the board. Over the long term, this is horribly poisonous because if nobody on the board talks about anything except for the dislike of other members, it won't be long for this world.
And of course, there are boards where the founder/owner simply decides he won't support it any more and shuts it down unilaterally. For example, Bob Brown did that with his Star Wars board.

I say if when the heat death of the universe comes...then the board come to an end.
If/when it comes, I think it will be due to a lack of interest, maybe it's just the effect of seeing a bigger forum, but the old places I used to hang out on and have done for 3 years now seem dead and lifeless - part of it is due to modding communities for HW being in a transition phase, but still - I wonder what this place will be doing in 5 years or so for activity...

I know of one board that had a resident hydra (troll of many accounts). He argued both sides of everything until he got everybody else riled up. Board admin finally gave up and took down the board. One of my friends figured it out and IMed him to call him on it, and he just sent a big ol' grinning smiley and said "Yup." It was far too late by then.
It's Rogue, not Rouge!

Lord Wong hit it on the head, if an end ever comes for this place, it'll be because of some sort of piss-assed politcking bullshit from within.
But we call him Lord Wong for a reason, and it's not just because of his Sithy online persona.
StarDestroyer.Net will never die. Not as long as he's around.![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)

I don't forsee an end to this board any time in at least the next few years. If everyone stopped talking about Star Trek vs. Star Wars tomorrow, it wouldn't impact this board hardly at all since we don't really talk about that very much anyway. We're too diverse to die that way.
Similarly, there are too many things being discussed on the board for a single political issue to be so all consuming that when nobody is talking about that issue any more, there's nothing on the whole board to talk about any more.
Hack attack death isn't likely, Mike has good habits of backing stuff up.
Troll death is even less likely since we're better protected against them than ASVS was and they never had a serious troll problem for almost 7 years.
Because the board is based in Canada, I don't see the extremely disturbing Orwellian tendencies taking place in the US causing the board to be shut down any time soon.
Because Mike already has a family with 2 kids and a full time job, I don't see any new developments causing him to lose all interest in the board.
I think that covers pretty much all the ways that a discussion group can die. So no, we're not going anywhere.

I've noticed that during one of Mike's short hiatuses from the board, the general driving energy died down a little. While the amount of people that contribute around here is quite high, I still think that this place languishes somewhat when he's not around. A board this driven needs a glorious leader and if Mike left, we'd need someone equally driven to run the place.

Board shutdown. Somehow I have a feeling even beyond the extinction of the human race, someone, somewhere, will be using these forums.

I think we'll last much longer- at least 10 years. We have expanded the forum topics sufficiently that Wars vs Trek need not be the only, let alone predominant, issue. Just look at N&P.Howedar wrote:Lack of interest will eventually kill SD.net. I give us five or six years.
