A minor thought, would it be bad form if we followed this mother's lead and SUED HER for not raising her, now very dead, son properly? I mean, it's not our fault as a society that she let him grow up the way he did, but her fault. Or would that be going against the entire concept of not filing stupid lawsuits?
“There are two kinds of people in the world: the kind who think it’s perfectly reasonable to strip-search a 13-year-old girl suspected of bringing ibuprofen to school, and the kind who think those people should be kept as far away from children as possible … Sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference between drug warriors and child molesters.” - Jacob Sullum
We could try suing her for emotional distress caused by having to hear about her fucking stupidity and irresponsibility, not to mention her trying to profit off her stupid kid's death.Vohu Manah wrote:A minor thought, would it be bad form if we followed this mother's lead and SUED HER for not raising her, now very dead, son properly? Whilst I'm no fan of alcohol and it's consumption, I still say this woman needs to wake up and look around. SHE raised her kid. SHE allowed him to go out to where he got drunk.
If he hadn't drunk Coors he would have just got something else.

While I would love to sue this stupid bitch, we cant simply sue for emotional damages. We would have to sue on a legal basis and claim emotional damages IN ADDITION.

That was kind of my point. It's absurd because they can't cut off advertising to "minors" without cutting out advertising to perfectly legal adults.Howedar wrote:Of course, but Coors cannot actively block TV reception to minors or something.Durandal wrote:Actually, I'm pretty sure they have a legal duty to not advertise to minors. Of course, this is absurd, because the target of most beer commercials is this little thing called the "18-24 demographic"; half of which is ... well, under 21.
You actually bought into that shit? Alcohol dehydrates you! It doesn't quench shit! I drink beer with my friends because we get piss-ass drunk and have a good time.Tsyroc wrote:It's funny that you mention the target demographic of beer commercials. I don't know how many times I tried beer because of those commercials plus tv and movies made it look like beer was it. Drinking beer was supposed to be fun, thirst quenching and lots of hot babes liked it.

Product liability law starts from the premise that manufacturers have a duty of care to do whatever they can to limit the damage that might arise from misuse of their product. If something is truly beyond their control, that's not their problem (for example, a warning on the side of a gun saying "only shoot people that you can legally shoot" would be pretty much meaningless). However, if it can be shown that Coors has deliberately marketed its product to the 18-24 demographic and has failed to take reasonable steps to discourage underage drinking (particularly if other brewers have done more), it is actually not unreasonable to argue that they have consciously neglected their duty of care as a product manufacturer.Joe wrote:I don't care that Coors is advertising for the 18-24 male demographic. 18 should be the legal drinking age anyway, not to mention that anyone who wants to drink is already drinking usually by age 16.
It's not about being an alcohol apologist; it's about understanding the duty of care which is attached to any manufacturer of retail products, in any industry. The tobacco and alcohol industries in this society are given wide latitude to disregard the kind of restrictions and obligations that are normally expected of manufacturers in other sectors. And before you call me an alcohol apologist, let me tell you that last night my roommate stumbled and went to sleep at 3AM, and around 5AM woke up and proceeded to take a long piss on the carpet. I don't like the drink, and I don't like what it does to people.

But, but whenever the mainly men stop doing their sweaty work they all feel like drinking a beer.Durandal wrote: You actually bought into that shit? Alcohol dehydrates you! It doesn't quench shit! I drink beer with my friends because we get piss-ass drunk and have a good time.
I know alcohol dehydrates you but that never stops them from showing that beer is supposed to be refreshing (a better term than thirst quenching). I think it was really the having fun and hot babes that were more of a selling point for trying beer (that and everyone else seems to enjoy it). Unfortunately it still tastes like shit and my experiences drinking it for the buzz just meant that there were a bunch more drunk guys around and women are *sooooooooo* attracted to drunk guys it just isn't funny.

Don't let watery, ugly tasting American beer put you off. There are some great beers out there; you just have to find it. Rathaus Pills, a German beer you probably don't have access too [in your bottle shops anyway; you could probably order it on-line] is a great beer with a pine, woody aftertaste. Then you've got Belgium beer which come in dazzling flavours like Chocolate and Strawberry.Tsyroc wrote:Unfortunately it still tastes like shit

The woman herself is being rather dumb and using the classic retaliation of "It's something else's fault."
Sorry, while Coors may have not done their all to get the image of what alcohol is, the kid did ingest the substance and now she's blaming everyone but her now dead son for his actions.

Belgian Lambic Ales are really outstanding, generally I give anything raspberry flavored a very wide berth, but Lindeman's Framboise magically delicious. You'd never know you were drinking anything beer-like.BoredShirtless wrote:Don't let watery, ugly tasting American beer put you off. There are some great beers out there; you just have to find it. None of those cases involve a breach of duty of care on the part of a product manufacturer. Are you suggesting that the entire concept of product liability should be abolished? Are you just suggesting that it should not be applied evenly, in order to avoid offending your subjective tastes? Or are you suggesting that it should be massively revamped to eliminate this possibility in future, with untold consequences for all other kinds of product liability?Solauren wrote:Geez, that's next

The company should have some liability, but the stupid mother shouldn't get any of the money from any legal battle.
