Needless to say this does not warrant any intelligence on AOL and its techs.. I still say we affirm that AOHell sucks, adding to an already long list of shitty things that company does.

On the current AOL 9.0 there's a nice little button at the bottom of your inbox that says "spam". You can designate any mail you want as spam. It's right next to the "delete" so I can see where people might get in the habbit of hitting "report spam" instead of "delete". You can go back and correct the error later but I imagine that some people don't notice what they've done or others really intended to do it.
Leave it to AOL to come up with something that's supposed to make the internet simple but still let's boneheads jack things up.

Anyway, I asked earlier about email address from sd.net and since everyone has been rushing to help here are a couple I came up with.
mike@stardestroyer.net
bbs@stardestroyer.net
and these which I'm not sure exists or not. admin@stardestroyer.net or maybe it's administrator@stardestroyer.net
So, if AOL's crap is working like it says it's supposed to work putting those email address in your address book should let them through regardless of how much everyone else has reported them as spam or if you've got the rest of your settings all jacked up.

All E-mails sent from this board have the return address bbs@stardestroyer.net. However, I don't think AOL is filtering on the E-mail address per se; that's too easy to spoof. I thnk they're filtering on the SMTP server, so E-mail coming from the bbs.stardestroyer.net E-mail SMTP server is being rejected. If I sent it from my home computer, it goes through my ISP's SMTP server rather than the BBS server, so there's no problem.
In short, the problem is that the board itself has been put on the spamlist based on its IP address. And I can't get it off the blacklist because they have a very narrow set of requirements for getting off the blacklist, and we don't meet it. I'm not sure what effect internal complaints would have, or this address-book idea that Tysroc came up with.

While I have no love for AOL, the one time I needed their tech support they were more than up to the task.
'Course, that was AOL Germany, who are supposedly not quite as stupid as their parent company.

Hopefully not. AOL in the US likes to layoff their experienced employees and hire people with no computer experience at all so they won't question what the little helper programs solution is. I imagine it'll only be a matter of time before the same thing happens all over.Batman wrote:Emphasis mine. I, however, take the time to at least read who the sender was before reporting spam, although I've been tempted to report The History Channel out of pure spite.

So far I don't think my address book idea will work. I got one PM today that I should have been notified by email and it didn't come through.Darth Wong wrote:All E-mails sent from this board have the return address bbs@stardestroyer.net. Well, I've emailed AOL about the problem so I'll let people know how it goes.
