Sci-Fi/Action genre, yeah. That's just about the only way to justify McTiernan or Jackson on any "best director" poll.
Not to mention that, as usual, animation is pretty much ignored.
True, though there are only a few real standout animation directors, largely due to the fact that directing an animated movie is quite a bit different from directing live action, and the role of the animators and supervising animators can often be just as, if not more, important than the role of the director.

Some of the great animated directors to add to the list would be Miyazaki, Disney, Bluth (who I find to be hit and miss), Lasseter (though computer animation could start a whole list of its own)...we'd be remiss if we left out the great American short cartoon directors such as Jones, Avery, Freleng, Hanna, Barbera, and Fleischer. As far as the Japanese contribution to animation goes, certainly no one director stands out as much as Miyazaki. There have been many great anime masterpieces, but no one Japanese director has as impressive a portfolio as Miyazaki.

And lots of people like Ralph Bakshi, though I've never seen a single thing of his that I didn't find completely retarded.

Good call. I'd certainly list him as one of the great directors working today. Aside from For Love of the Game, his entire body of work is kickass (and even then, it was material rather than direction which was lacking). And judging by the trailers for Spider-Man 2, he isn't letting up in the "supreme badass" department.

My top 5

1. Akira Kurasawa
2. Martin Scorsese
3. Clint Eastwood
4. Alferd Hitchcock
5. Orson Welles or John Woo (classic workds, before they became currupted)

for the ones mentioned eh...

very derivative, Lucas barrowed heavily from Copella and Kurasawa, Spielberg is just too tight assed with his camera work (comes from being Jack Webb's bitch), Cameron unlike scorsese hasn't learned anything from his time working as Corman's bitch. Damn I wish boddonovitch could do something original, but he came under welles wing at the worst time in the fat man's carreer...

Can't have a director discussion with out Ed Wood. You can say what you want about his movies, but the man wanted to make movies, and he made due with what he had.

Start another poll about that if you want, there's simply not enough room for all these directors in 10 slots. Besides, I don't know/care about anime. :P

On the list: Steven Spielberg. He's done so many great movies (including the Indiana Jones Trilogy, hot damn), there's too many to list. I would say George Lucas if he had directed Empire and Jedi, but he didn't. The only two he's got going for him are American Graffiti and ANH.

Off the list: Kevin Smith.

Actually, it was more of a lament of how animation gets the short end of the stick concerning film studies.

But if I ever were to make such a thread, at least I'd have the smarts not to make it a poll. :P

Kurosawa and Kubrick. These two added more to the art of cinema then any ten other directors combined, with the possible exception of Orson Wells.

My favourites are Hitchcock, Blake Edwards.
Honorable mention to Leni Riefenstahl (who inspired so many other directors.)

But I don't see why or how Lucas ever could be considered a good director... Mediocre, at best. AOTC left me crying on the floor.

I got 2: Matrix Reloaded.

Personally my favourite director is James Cameron. If you completely ignore Titanic he has a kick ass back catalogue. An honourable mention also goes to Luc Besson.

Why ditch Titanic?
It's a very compelling, very good drama.
One of my favourite movies, even though DiCaprio stars in it...

I am going to have the go with Yoshitoshi ABe, the man behind Serial Experiments Lain, Haibane Renmei, and Niea_7. Although most series credit him as the "screenplay" or "chartacter design" man, he is said to have basically directed Lain and Renmei. As ABe put it, "they are my characters, only I can really make them live." I can't get enough of his series, and I hope another comes out really soon.

Bah. Like asking your favourite actor or band, it's hopeless. Far too many diverse kinds of director to just say one is my favourite. I can assure you there's more than Spielberg and Lucas out there, some of the talent today that isn't as commonly known is great such as Mendes, Singer, Nolan, Besson, Sommers etc.

I think right now I'd have to go with Segio Leone if only because I'm getting the special edition of The Good, The Bad & The Ugly Monday on DVD.

From those listed, Cameron gets my vote, the stuff he does just seems to workalmost all of the time, even titanic, though i found the story crapworthy, did look cool in the way it was told.

Nitpick: Tim Burton did not direct Nightmare Before Christmas, Henry Selick did.

But fortunately, Burton has plenty of other badass movies to stave off criticism with: Ed Wood, Big Fish, Beetlejuice, Sleepy Hollow, Mars Attacks!, and, of course, Pee Wee's Big Adventure.

Oh, and this isn't necromancy; this thread was still on the first page.
