Hilarious (and sobering) results of Iraq poll

Americans believe Saddam terror link
By Andrew Gumbel in Los Angeles

24 April 2004

A majority of Americans still believes Saddam Hussein was in cahoots with al-Qa'ida and that Iraq either had weapons of mass destruction or a programme for developing them, according to a new opinion poll.

The poll, conducted by the University of Maryland, showedmost respondents were unaware of the testimony of David Kay, the administration's chief weapons inspector, that he had found no weapons, or that of Richard Clarke, the former counter-terrorism tsar whose book Against All Enemies has been the talk of Washington.

A staggering 82 per cent of respondents believed most experts supported the notion that Iraq was providing "substantial support" to al-Qa'ida - a contention that President Bush has been forced to disavow. Almost 60 per cent were unaware that world opinion was against the war in Iraq, with 21 per cent saying the world was behind the US-led invasion and 38 per cent saying views were "evenly divided".

The poll also showed a correlation between people's ignorance and their political affiliation. Among those who believed WMD had been found in Iraq, 72 per cent said they would vote to re-elect Mr Bush in November and 23 per cent said they supported his Democratic challenger, John Kerry. Among those who knew that no WMD had been found,74 per cent supported Mr Kerry and 23 per cent backed the President.
Old lies never die
"Right now we can tell you a report was filed by the family of a 12 year old boy yesterday afternoon alleging Mr. Michael Jackson of criminal activity. A search warrant has been filed and that search is currently taking place. Mr. Jackson has not been charged with any crime. We cannot specifically address the content of the police report as it is confidential information at the present time, however, we can confirm that Mr. Jackson forced the boy to listen to the Howard Stern show and watch the movie Private Parts over and over again."

Eventually though, people will realize they've been lied to. I started doubting 4 months after the end of the war when no weapons were found and I quit believing after the unit whose job it was to search for the 'weapons' was sent home.

It just takes longer to sink in for some people.
However, dislike of Bush doesn't automatically equal support of Kerry.

That's why I wanted Dean to win the primary. I could have voted for Dean with a clear conscience. Asking me to choose between Kerry and Bush is like asking me if I'd rather be decapitated or hanged.

I guess I'll write in Dean's name.
"You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours."- General Sir Charles Napier

Almost everyone I talk to who still believes this believes that the weapons were moved to Syria. Then, we invade Syria, they're going to wind up in Iran, and then onto Bolivia or Sumatra or wherever.

 Link, please? Or some source?

Can ten percent of people really be so uneducated that they think the sun moves around the earth? Is this poll from some backwards third world country?

I have read it in a sience magazine here two, three years ago, called "P.M.". They had made that represenative poll in the US and some European countries.
The US was the one with the 10%, the other countries got less 3-7%.

Do not call P.M. a science magazine.

Peter Moosleitner is a creationist afaik.

He is not longer the publisher, however the magazine still contains articles about unproved theories and pseudoscience.

I just heard that he is creationist from a friend which read his book " Die unsterbliche Seele der Menschheit",.
However I did not read it myself and I could be wrong.

Now that you mention it....

I can vaguely remember a article from a P.M: of 1989, where here compared Theory of Evolution and Creationism. The Hammer was, that he simply declared a 2:2 between them. Ignoring that Creationsm is totally insane!
Remmbering it now, it was a horrible article.

Popular Mechanics has publicized some pretty weird shit over the years. It's funny how it's considered a scientific resource even though no one would say that about, say, Car&Driver.

This must be a parody, considering "Beneath the Earth, or hanging off the edges, is a land populated by either green-skinned women or Nazis.".. Right?

I think it's a parody too.
The original flat earth was confined, restricted, and twisted into a perverse spherical shape by a conspiracy of TELEVISION BROADCASTERS in an attempt to realize their dream of TOTAL HUMAN MIND CONTROL through subsurviant captive homogonized market share

Of course it's a parody. Check out some of the FAQs:
FAQ wrote: 5. Does the "middle corner" prove that 5=6?
Yes.

There is a school of thought which states, however, that the Earth does not move through space, but rather that it rests on the back of a giant turtle, and that what we call gravity is, in fact, the turtle's animal magnetism.

19. What is the "Springfield Effect"?
The Springfield Effect is the name given to the phenomenon by which every place named Springfield is hard-linked in hyperspace to every other place of this name. In other words, there is only one place named Springfield, but it is "linked" to various locations in the world.
20. Does Idaho exist
No. The existence of Idaho is a lie, fabricated by a conspiracy of cartographers, as is England (see question 10).
21. What about North Dakota?
That doesn't exist either.
Any questions?

Who are these people, though? I wish the poll would have added the question: "Where do you get your news?" or "How often do you read the newspaper?"

I'm willing to bet that most of the respondents who don't know that there was no al-Qaeda link and there were no WMDs, also don't read the paper and probably only watch the local news.
I guess I'll write in Dean's name.
If you're going to do that, do what I do when voting for the slots of things that don't matter, like the seats on the country "Noxious Weed Board." I vote for Saint Boniface or someone else who'd do a good job if he wasn't dead (or possibly apocryphal).

Does anyone know the current Creation/evolution split in America? The last I heard it was roughly 50/50.
