As I understand it, Sanders owned a small motel and a restaurant in Kentucky, where he sold his chicken. When the interstates were built, it took away a lot of his business, he began traveling around selling the pressure cookers and seasonings he used for the chicken, to restaurants for a small commission per piece sold. Harman was the first person to take him up on the offer, and he suggested calling it Kentucky Fried Chicken because Utah Fried Chicken sounded weird.

Hmm. I think that it was actually just a motel and the guests were enticed by the smell of Sanders' cooking.
