Well, you can't get approved to even have an account here if you have AOL because of the spam blacklist. So you're fucked from the start. The Aliens wrote:Ohhh, I understand- you can't get approved to change your e-mail on AOL because it's not accepting any e-mails from here. I *guess* they could work around it by asking an admin to change their email or posting a request in testing...Rogue 9 wrote:Well damn it.

That's not strictly true; if one of us sends the activation link from our own home E-mail account, it will get through even if the "From" field is a stardestroyer.net E-mail address, because the SMTP server won't be bbs.stardestroyer.net, and that's what AOL is blacklisting (I tested this earlier, by sending an E-mail from one of my stardestroyer.net addresses to an AOLer). The Wookiee wrote:Well, you can't get approved to even have an account here if you have AOL because of the spam blacklist. However, an AOLer would be unable to change his account E-mail on his own, because it will send a confirmation E-mail to the AOL address before the E-mail address change takes effect, and this confirmation E-mail will naturally come from the board rather than one of our own home computers, so it will be bounced.
Just a damned mess all around; maybe internal complaints will alleviate the problem.

If I'm following this correctly what your saying means that even if you changed the email address bbs@stardestroyer.net to something slightly different it would still be blocked by AOL because it's originating from the same SMTP server (not that I know what that is)?
Does this also mean that AOL would block items that are sent from the original SMTP server that are forwarded from a second server (please let me know if I'm being totally clueless here because I really don't know what I'm asking)?
Let's hope so. I've been complaining alot and I think I got the problem fully explained to them this time.Just a damned mess all around; maybe internal complaints will alleviate the problem.

SMTP = Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. An SMTP server is an actual mail server. This is what AOL is blocking. Mike could have an e-mail addy of "freeporn@fuckoffspammers.com and it would still be blocked by AOL. The e-mail address doesn't matter, its the server ITSELF thats being blacklisted.Tsyroc wrote: If I'm following this correctly what your saying means that even if you changed the email address bbs@stardestroyer.net to something slightly different it would still be blocked by AOL because it's originating from the same SMTP server (not that I know what that is)?

Anyway, so far I've recieved one Official Email from AOL regarding my original comments about their spam blocker. It didn't really tell me anything I didn't already know so I'm waiting to see if I get anything from the follow up messages I sent.
So far, adjusting the settings on my email has just let more spam through but still no bbs@stardestroyer.net.

You know, for all those people that are putting blame on certain people, you're dead wrong.
AOL has a shitty spam filter and it tends to catch any instituational mailing and automatically dump it in a spam folder. The board's notification Emails are among those so labeled. The contents of said spam folder, unless the user goes in and corrects the mistake wind up being sent to AOL as spammers. Enough of these wound up going through and we got nailed.
Trolls have nothing to do with it, just the usual AOL shit.

So what you're saying, it's all AOL's fault. I can believe that any day.Stormbringer wrote:You know, for all those people that are putting blame on certain people, you're dead wrong.

What's annoying is that they say that their spam filter will always let through people in your address book. Well, it doesn't seem to be working for me. Either that or it takes a long damn time for the settings to take effect.
It didn't take long for more of their spam to get through when I shut off their filter though.
