On this day, 1915.
On this day, 1915 Australian and New Zealand troops landed at Gallipoli.
2721 Kiwi's remain there still.
8000 Australians never left.
Lest we forget.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

That we dying younger hiding from the police man over there
Just for breathing in the air they wanna leave me in the chair
Electric shocking body rocking beat streeting me to death"

30,000 BrittishFrom the ANZAC MEMORIAL on Gallipoli wrote: THE ANZAC MEMORIAL
Those heroes that shed their blood And lost their lives...
You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country.
Therefore, rest in peace.
There is no difference between the Johnnies
And the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side,
Here in this country of ours.
You, the mothers, who sent their sons from far away countries...
Wipe away your tears.
Your sons are now lying in our bosom And are in peace.
After having lost their lives on this land, they have
Become our sons as well.
8,500 Australian
3000 Kiwis
50,000 from the commonwealth overall
10,000 French
Attacking fixed, dug-in positions they killed more than 90,000 Turks and Ottamans before retreating.

Amen. Did anyone ever figure out how the ANZAC forces ended up on the wrong beach?

For six weary weeks I kept myself alive
Tho around me the corpses piled higher...
Then a big Turkish shell knocked me arse over head
And when I awoke in me hospital bed
And saw what the shell had left of my legs...
Never knew there were worse thing than dying.
No more I'll go waltzing Matilda
Up and down and around the outback
For to hunt tenting pegs, a man needs both legs...
No more waltzing Matilda for me........
I need to find the rest of that song.

No more waltzing Matilda for me........

Nitram, slightly high on cough syrup: Do you know you're beautiful?
Me: Nope, that's why I have you around to tell me.
Nitram: You -are- beautiful. Anyone tries to tell you otherwise kill them.

Best I can do from memory, "And the Band played Waltzing Matilda" as performed by Clam Chowder:
"When I was a young lad I carried me pack
and I lived the free life of a rover.
From the Murray's green basin to the dusty Outback,
I waltzed my Matilda All Over
But in 1915 the country said son,
its time to stop rambling there's work to be done
So they gave me a tin hat, and they gave me a gun,
and they sent me away to the war
And the Band played Waltzin Matilda,
as the ship pulled away from the key
Amidst all the tears the flag-waving and cheers,
they sailed off for Galipoli
(Can't recall the words to this half-verse, sorry)
Jonny Turkey was ready he'd primed himself well,
he chased us with bullets, and he rained us with shells,
And in five minutes flat he'd blown us all to hell,
nearly blew us back home to Australia
Those who were living just tried to survive
in that mad world of blood death and fire
And for six weary weeks I kept myself alive
while all around me the corpses piled higher
Then a big Turkish shell knocked me arse over head
And when I awoke in me hospital bed
And saw what had been done and I wished I were dead
Never knew there were worse thing than dying.
No more I'll go waltzing Matilda
Up and down and around the outback
For to hunt tenting pegs, a man needs both legs...
No more waltzing Matilda for me
They gathered the crippled the wounded and maimed
And they sent us back home to Australia
The legless the armless, the blind, the insane
All those proud wounded heroes of Southa
And as our ship pulled into the circular key,
I looked at the place where me legs used to be
And thanked Christ there was no one there waiting for me
To grieve, and to mourn, and to pity
And the band played Waltzin Matilda
As they carried us down the gangway
But nobody cheered they just stood there and stared
And they turned all their faces away
And now every April I sit on my porch
and I watch the parade pass before me
And I watch my old comrades who proudly they march
renewing old dreams of past glory
And the old men march slowly all bent stiff and sore
the weary old heroes from a forgotten war
and the young people all ask what are they marching for
and I ask myself the same question
And the Band played Waltzin Matilda
And the old men still answered the call
But year by year their numbers grew fewer
and now nobody marches at all
Waltzin Matilda
Waltzin Matilda
Who'll go a Waltzin Matilda with me
And their ghosts can be heard as they march by the billabong
Who'll go a waltzin Matilda
With me."

I've heard it from the Makem Brothers and other folk singers. No matter who sings it, tho, the message is still the same: the 'heros' of that war were doubly wounded, once by the war, again by the government and populous for forgetting their sacrifice.consequences wrote:
