Need software to help sprite editing

Post by Hamel »

~~ I was prepared to rant for 5 paragraphs about my HL editing disaster, but I'll make it snappy:

I need a program that will export the frames of an animated gif with all of the exported frames having the same color depth and palette, and as a bitmap. Irfanview can't do it, Animation Shop won't, nor will Photoshop or Imageready. Does such a program exist?

will it also go to town
"Right now we can tell you a report was filed by the family of a 12 year old boy yesterday afternoon alleging Mr. Michael Jackson of criminal activity. A search warrant has been filed and that search is currently taking place. Mr. Jackson has not been charged with any crime. We cannot specifically address the content of the police report as it is confidential information at the present time, however, we can confirm that Mr. Jackson forced the boy to listen to the Howard Stern show and watch the movie Private Parts over and over again."

Is this for Half-Life? If so, try http://www.planethalflife.com/mach3/spr ... rview.html

I've made custom crosshairs for HL with that before...

Nono~ I use that for extracting frames out. The problem is, if I edit a frame by introducing a color that was not in the original sprite palette, then there is no way to replace that animated sprite. It will give me an error about the palette.

I've tried to find a way around it by extracting the frames, editing the ones I want, throwing all of them into a gif (giving all the frames the same palette in the process) then extracting the gif frames as bmps. The last step does not work because:

1) Irfanview exports the gif in a fucked up manner, where the frames should be 128x128 but some end up 28x67 or some shit

2) Extracting each frame individually in Image Ready and Animation Shop will give the frames their own palettes. Even if I load an appropriate color table file it won't work, because the colors get extremely fucked up.

Here's something I made a while back using IrfanView, Paint, and Animation Shop:
Image

It was originally a GIF of the Alderaan destruction scene, I extracted the frames, pasted the enlarged smiley frames while overlapping the "shield effect" over the face, then put it back together with Animation Shop. I tried extracting the frames again to simulate approximately what you were doing, and I had no problems with image size or anything. What version of IrfanView are you using?

I'm using the latest version - 3.90

It likes to spit out frames as little chunks of what it originally was.

Btw, when you extracted all the frames with i_view, did all the frames have the same palette? That's the key issue I'm having.

Yes, they all have the same palette.

I think you can do it with photoshop, all you need is to have your palette in advance, then make an action that will automatically copy the active frame to a new document, lower the color depth with your palette file, and export it (with the name of the frame, even).
