And I kinda resent the 'more powerful' statement, since the USMC always loses wargames against AU forces, during the Bali deployment, they lost to a reserve unit. Obvously, however, I hardly hear about the reverses.
Self-sustaining as they don't rely so much on a fixed depot for supplies.I don't really know how the USMC sustain themselves, but I do know how the army does it. We draw supplies from a fixed chain of command, depots, adminstrative chains and so forth. That sort of thing limits our deployment capability overseas. While this problem is usually solved by creating RDF forces, army RDF forces are either more vulnerable than most, because they're light infantry, or their presence in the field is more limited by fuel for helicopters and transport vehicles.

The Marines have it differently. For one, their deployment is aided by offshore prepositioning if equipment. At any moment in time, the USN maintains transports out in the ocean, carrying tanks, helicopters and artillery for the USMC. If a conflict erupts, while light infantry like the 81st Airborne mobilise and use air transport to reach the theatre, the US sealift will be sending its prepositioned ships into the theatre itself. They're get into a port, beach or whatnot and land the equipment. Meanwhile, marines from the US airlift into the theatre through civilian aircraft, then military C17s/C130s/whatever into the hostile zone, carrying nothing more than their M-16s.

So the USMC is, by design, more prepared for long term operations?

I'm not sure I know about wargames from the last few years; is there somewhere I can check my scuttlebutt? Like, a ladder site or something? :)

The USMC is designed to be more capable of sustained operations in the period before enough territory is taken and secured to provide a normalised supply line to the army units that follow on. However, the Marines do not have sufficient manpower by themselves to fully prosecute a long-term campaign against a serious opponent, especially given the casualties they are likely to incur in the initial assault upon the enemy.

Cosquences answered your question. The USMC, by essentially having a floating, mobile base is better equipped for rapid deployment than army units.

As for wargames, hell, you're the one who said the USMC lost to AU. I presumed you meant Aussie.

Acck! Edit: I should had said the USMC was praised for their performance last year. In these kind of exercises, a "fictional" scenario is created and the US goes to battle alongside her erstwhile allies.

Interesting note: The CIA world fact book refers to the NZ standard army as 'Special Forces'. Same story with Aussie standard army IIRC.

One of the reasons sited was that they're trained and qualified to use any of the weapons, differing from US weapon specialization training.

Slightly off-topic, but man, that is one bigoted site, majorly homophobic, like in this thread.

They seem quite convinced that the entire US is going to turn gay within 50 years.

I could never find it online either, but my mates from the Aussie Army tell me the same thing, they are considered 'Special Forces' even though they are just regular grunts by the US Army standard.

Its not even that. The main site is Yesasia, sorta asian entertainment "amazon" website. You can purchase posters, movies, mugs, photobooks, etc etc of your favourite idols there.

So, they're usually either chicks, or guys around 12-16 chasing after idols and the like.

Most amusing ADF story I heard from my mate in arty: on infantry training with the USA in Hawaii (with some light division there) they found that the Americans really did say 'HOO YAH' all the time. So, whenever the Americans were taking orders nearby, they started crying 'HOO YAH' at inappropriate times :) Since there are HOO YAH and non-HOO YAH orders, they didn't impress the yanks very much. *shakes head* crazy Americans.

That would be the 25th Infantry Division. And that's "Hooah!" We're not Navy SEALs.

Is the 25th a light division? They'd just been issued a load of M4s at the time, I think it was around 2001-2002ish. Do different services have different ... things? Is that *really* the appropriate response to certain situations?
