I am going to buy one. More specifically, I am going to buy this one. It's for outdoor use and has all sorts of nice features, like 24 MB of memory, maps and altimeter for a relatively low price.
Since I have to put up with EU prices, it will cost me 340 euros (from a shop in denmark), about the double it would if I could order it from the US. Bleh.
Anyway, I just wondered if there's someone here who knows about this stuff more than me, and can convince me to buy another GPS before it's too late.

You might want to buy one that has basemaps of Europe and not just the Americasthe site wrote:The eTrex Vista combines a basemap of North and South America, with a barometric altimeter and electronic compass.

No, but you're lucky. If it was possible, I would order the device using your address and make you send it to me. Unfortunately, I was told that even private sendings cannot evade taxation and problems, these days. The only viable solution is either going myself to the US or knowing someone who does.Dalton wrote:Oh, bite meColonel Olrik wrote:Look in the lower left corner. I swear, one of these days I'll get a very large bag and go there on vacations.
I got to use a Magellen SporTrack Colour in Nepal and it's the best thing ever. Ok, so I found that it costs like $450 US but this thing is just so cool! Number 1, it's colour which makes reading landmarks & stuff a lot faster than on a black & white screen, but the best thing is that it can map trails as you go and download them to your computer! You can set it to mapping mode, and carry it along when biking, walking, or driving and it'll draw a map of the route you took complete with landmarks & waypoints! A map which you can then download to your computer. The coolness of that feature cannot be described!

My wife's Chevy Trailblazer has a GPS built into it as part of the On-Star system.

This is my GPS:
Silva/Brunton Multinavigator
No fancy map but room for 1000+ waypoints.
It has a real compass, altimeter and a barometer. Rugged as hell waterproof and it floats.
It works great in the wilderness an at the sea.
Higly recommended

Come on, jegs, you're obviously an expert on the matter, put some effort into it! At least say the names of the devices, and if they're good for all-conditions outdoor use.
Jmac, the color may be useful, but I don't know if the extra price and presumably lower battery life is worth it.. As for the computer connection and maps, the Garmin Vista also has it.
Faram, don' tyou think that nowadays map-capability is a must in a GPS? it is just so much more fun..
I am seriously annoyed with the GPS manufacturers, btw. All the models I've seen in the 300-500 euros price range only have a serial port computer connection, which my laptop lacks. And the USB adaptor costs.. 60 euros! Fucking hell, that's a lot of money to give for nothing. Is there a way aound this?
