How does your college take attendence?

Post by Imperium² »

I have to swipe a card reader every class period. I am a negligent card swiper myself...how does your school make sure you are there?

Depends on the teacher. Some call roll. One of my teachers passes around a copy of the class roster and we all have to sign next to our names. A very few insist on a seating chart so they can keep track of us. But all have to take attendance, and if you skip enough classes you fail the course.

By quizzes or (in a small class) just a feeling of who is there and who is not.

Only a very few classes require attendance.

Pop quizzes, and the fact that if you don't come to class you'll be in a world of shit come exam time.

My professors have used almost every system on earth, but never card readers. The only time I swipe my card is when I use the library or grab a drink from the machine. In the case of the latter my student ID doubles as a debit card. It is probably the single greatest achievement of convience.

However, as my classes are now almost all junior and senior level, attendance is never taken anymore. If you aren't at lecture, your tests will demonstrate it.

In my course only practical courses have a really obvious system. A second teacher hangs in the wings and ticks off a sheet. And if your not there for the pracs, it's pretty obvious that youre missing (as there is one seat per person. (this is a music course, Pracs are generally orchestra or chamber rehearsals.. 100% attendance required with the exception of if you arrange for a same-instrument person to be in your seat for the duration of the prac. ie, I can go and ring up 'bob the trumpet player' and if he isn't already in that prac, he can show up and pretend to be me, and then I don't fail :p but do it too many times (no written rule, just a 'jibe' say 3 times in a row is fail territory) and they kinda figure it out.

For some of the bigger lectures attendance is officially not really needed (I passed a course where I attended a total of 2 lectures because I had a tutorial at the same time for another course lol. just required a bit more work at exam time and stuff, but got through ok. thank god for friends :p )

some lectures send round a signon sheet.

Wow! My college NEVER took attendence, except on the first day or two of classes at the most. That's really odd, that they would have to do that.

Same here. It's kind of surprising to me. Hell, only a scant few of my teachers even took attendance on the first day.

It doesn't. What do they care? Either way they have your money. For almost all my courses I could've skipped almost every single class except the midterm & the Final.

Depends on the prof. We're small enough that most professors know everyone in any class above 100-level, so we know we'll get asked where we were. This semester, I had 2 take attendance; 3 didn't. Most profs who take attendance will either dock points for each absence or kick you out after a certain number of absences (usually around 3). It's not bad, though, because our semesters are about two or three weeks shorter than the public unis (it's Finals Week right now).

The regularly schedualed tests do well enough to show who's been coming to class.

What about loans? My school gives me the line, "It's so the government knows you are attending." I get federal loans so if I do not swipe then that means I am not there and they put all my loans on hold...even though by the time they do that the money has been released.

Uni doesn't care. I never got attendance checked, except for group work, and that was by the groups themselves.

We got random in-class tests and for some classes we had movies & special presentations from guest speakers, and of course when missing a class could leave one clueless for the remainder of the semester people try pretty hard to make it to all classes.

My university didn't care whether you showed up or not, but if you never showed up you would never hear about assignments, and not hearing about an assignment was no excuse to not get it done. Basically, their attitude was "I don't care if you show up for every class, and I don't care if you flunk out either; I'm not your Mommy."

Hell, colleges love flunking kids out. Freshman fuckups still bring in revenue.

I think they simply want something to hold over my head and the other students. They release the funds from loans, grants and other sources of money about week 4. So I fail to see why attendence tracking will "make sure people are attending school" for the sake of government loans. Swipe for the first 4 weeks, get your money, then quit. They will find out if you are enrolled or not starting next semester. If not, no more loans and you have to start repaying.

When attendence is mandatory, they sometimes take role on the first day of class. The rest of the time they just base attendence on whether or not you turn in assignments and quizzes.
