The soldiers in question reportedly were assisting interrogators from US intelligence agencies.

1) In order to fight effectively, the enemy has to be dehumanized: They are no longer humans, but ragheads, Arabs, Islamists, Terrorists, Murderers of US citizens. This view makes it much easier to torture them.
2) We know that torture has been used in U.S. military prisons since 9/11 to extract information about terrorist organizations. This is nothing new, what's new is that pictures have been made public.

I don't think a "reservist whose full-time job is as a prison officer in the US state of Virginia" does not know how to treat prisoners. He was lacking guidelines, so when some intelligence types told him to "soften the prisoner up", he improvised - and got caught. Bad for him, he deserves the punishment he should get, but the really bad guys, the ones who gave the orders, won't be charged.

CBS says the pictures it obtained show a wide range of abuses, including:

Prisoners with wires attached to their genitals

A dog attacking a prisoner

Prisoners being forced to simulate having sex with each other

A detainee with an abusive word written on his body.

The prison where the abuses are alleged to have taken place was a notorious torture centre during the Saddam Hussein era.

Maybe a few of them, but I have the suspicion that there is a lot more crap like that going on out there that simply hasn't been photographed yet. That's the whole problem with human rights abuses (well, despite the obvious problems, that is), the main source of them never feel the consequences. It's always the mindless, sadistic puppets who are actually physically giving the beatings that get charged, never the manipulative, inhumane monsters higher up who actually set things up so that this is possible.

Need an example? Slavery in the US, several hundred thousand debt slaves are kept in the US at any given time. A few are forced prostitutes in brothels, but there are quite a few that work in citrus and tomato fields in Florida and other southern states. Occasionally one of these operations will be busted and several dozen to several hundred debt slaves will be freed, but still the system ticks along just as happily as always. Mainly because the people that actually fund it, the large corporations responsible for turning the slave-grown citrus and tomatoes into Minute Maid orange juice and the tomatoes you get in your Taco Bell tacos, disavow any responsibility, claiming ignorance of their suppliers' practices.

This is the main reason why I am now very picky about what I eat and buy. If at all possible, I would prefer not to perpetuate the situation by funding the corporations that run these atrocities.

The NGS link doesn't mention anything about that part, but I think they had that number in it, and they specifically pointed fingers at Taco Bell. I think that may have been his source.

do you really need someone to tell you "No, you may not mutilate and torture the prisoners." It's by far more the fault of the people who did the deed than it is the brass. Why do you need a regulation to tell you something that should be common sense?
