While I like the original US political idea, it's hard to feel patriotic about a country that has done as bad shit as any typical European power.

The only thing the US could be guilty of is sometime choosing the wrong guy for president.

Don't forget that this country was formed by waging a war of genocidal conquest, nothing in the past 100 years even comes close to what went on in the the first century of our existance.

Unless being given a medal, we don't generally stand up or anything. Just not part of the culture.

We do do the karaoke thing though.

I am not proud of my nation, per se, but I do respect it. I will stand for the anthem (but not the pledge). It's more for what the anthem was written about than anything else that I do, though - independece, yadda yadda.

I'll stand when its sung, but I don't keep myself stiff, or sing along.

I do it not to appear to different, but when i'm at home, I just tune over, I don't give a shit.

I rarely watch sports and our national anthem is not played on many other occasions (excluding when they play it on TV before shutting down the transmissions for the night, but who the hell stays up that late anyway).
But even if it would be, I wouldn't be standing. What's the point? I think it's like when they stand and sing in church: Exercise for the old people :P . No real meaning to it.

I guess I'm not very patriotic at all; I don't even know what happened on June 6th that made it so important to become Sweden's national day (but neither do the vast majority of the rest of our population...).

I have the upmost respect for God Save the Queen. A lot of social events here in N.I. use the playing of the anthem to signal the night is over. In some of those places if you don't stand for the anthem you have trouble ver standing again. I'm also quite partial to the Soldier Song and stand for it if i'm down in Dublin watching Ireland playing rugby.

If I'm at events where the national anthem is played I will stand, remove my hat, if I'm wearing one, and place my right hand over my heart. On ocassion I might even try to sing along.

Now, I do not normally stand when the national anthem is played on tv, although I think I might have done it once when a station was signing off and I was a little bit plastered.

If I'm at an event where they play two national anthems I will stand for both and be polite and respectful about the other nation's anthem.

In the 19th Century? Listen, I don't want to whitewash our atrocities against the Indians but face it, they lost at their own game. They simply got slaughtered by white people instead of other Indians.

If I'm present while the anthem is played, I bow to cultural expectations and stand up.
But it's not played very often. Only before international sport events.
Or something like our national holiday, but apart from that...it's not done very often...

And for the record, I like our anthem, the German one, as well as the Russian, British, and Italian. The American one is just so...flat, unthrilling.

While I'm proud of my country, I have to admit that I can't stand our national anthem. It just doesn't say what it really means to be a Canadian. At least the American national anthem gets to the heart of being American. It's all about rockets, bombs and fragging people. Our anthem should be about hockey, maple syrup and mention that once a bunch of us got really drunk and went and burned down the White House. And to not piss off Quebec, there should be a line about poutine.

If there's peer pressure I stand, otherwise there's no point. Not that I don't like it or anything, I just don't like the Monarchy. I'd much prefer it if it was a song about our diversity and achievements and general coolness of the british people, not some magic man in the sky working his juju to make sure some hereditary figurehead doesn't die.

naaa, national anthems are dumb. i sometimes sing the american one though because it´s got an interesting melody. the lyrics are stupid as fuck (as, i imagine, in most other NAs), but the melody rules.

It's been my experience that the speed of the song (tempo, right?) can make a huge difference, especially in respect to NAs. When it's slowed down, more often than not, it makes it more stirring, especially to me. When I hear the Star Spangled Banner slowed down a bit, that really gets to me.

On a side note, it's the same way with the Marine's Hymn (no words, of course, on all counts in this thread). When it's played at what I generally hear it's "usual" pace (fairly quick and lively) it doesn't do too much. But when slowed down, it really has that much more of an impact on me.

And on that note, I have yet to be able to find a slower version of the Marine's Hymn. I really wish I could. :(

I stand still for the anthem at sporting events because every one else does. But it's just a song, and a crappy one at that; I don't really give a shit about it.

Canada's national anthem in English blows, but the French one kicks ass. Go figure. And yes, I susually stand for it, if the majority of people around me are standing.

I particularly like the Red Army Choir rendition, even if I have no clue what the hell they're saying.

Anyway, yes, I do stand for the national anthem. I'm not a nationalist, but I'm no anarchist either.

Also, Kimigayo kicks ass :p I think the Netherlands one is pretty good, too.
