I saw on the news some time ago a video of the same performance shot from a different angle, almost on the stage to Dean's left. Maybe the audio was manipulated afterwards, but from that position the "scream" was a much more subdued shout. According to the report, the roar was an unfortunate result of the crowd's cheering mixing with Dean's shout and blending in a weird way in the microphone.
