Missiles Obsolete

Missiles Obsolete
I remember hearing from a respectable newssource that Gl stated Ep. III would explain why missile wepaons are obsolete in the OT. I figure it will be an offhand statement (Much like the 'Clones are freethinking' line in AotC).
What're your thoughts?
P.S. I'll dig up the link if I can find it.

If its true thats a nice tie in to Ep4, it would make the rebels seem even more "shoddy" using mere missile to attack the Death Star (and we all know how much GL likes low tech beats high tech plot devices, see also Ewoks,Gungans)

I can't seem to remeber an Espode III being planed of the Star Wars Missle Defense ProgramAre you sure you aren't mixing it up with the 'Star Wars' anti-missile program?
But if there is do tell I'd love to hear the details

Given that four out of fire Star Wars movies have had missiles used in combat, often with quite powerful effect, I think pecker is just very confused.

Missiles seem to be used only against capital ships, by fighters, during the films, but we have seen so little capital ship combat that it is quite probable that some larger ships use missiles, also. It could also be that missiles are not as useful as blasters and laser weapons, because of their low ammunition capacities, or some other factor, but this does not seem probable. It is more likely that the more modern capital ships forego their use because of the ease with which they are intercepted at the long ranges capital ships usually fight at, and because of the higher powers of their turbolasers (there is almost certainly a practical maximum for the yield of explosive weapons, but there may not be for energy weapons, as evidenced by the DS and Eclipse Super Lasers).

Connor, he started with Ep. 1. You can't have a prequel for Ep. 1.

There ARE various other kinds of missiles used in SW, even by individual soldiers.Vympel wrote:Can't believe everyone is totally confused:

Yeah, in the EU, which George Lucas doesn't turn his mind to if it doesn't suit him. He made a point of showing off missiles in Attack of the Clones; it seems that in Ep III, why they weren't used in say Hoth will be explained ...

It, likely, already has been. Turbolaser technology, for the Imperials, developed to the point where it was more efficient in firepower/volume, and to where it was more efficient in terms of ammunition/volume. It also may be, for the Rebels, that the missiles are just too expensive, or that Imperial jamming has developed to the point where missiles are ineffective.Vympel wrote:Yeah, in the EU, which George Lucas doesn't turn his mind to if it doesn't suit him. What do you mean? There are no missiles in ROTJ of the nature seen on the LAAT and Seperatist battle droids. His Divine Shadow wrote:Try ROTJVympel wrote:Yeah, in the EU, which George Lucas doesn't turn his mind to if it doesn't suit him

The imperials are the ultimate in military hard ware in the Star Wars universe. So if they have trouble hitting X-wings. I doubt that they have much of a chance of intercepting missiles.... so I dont see how they could become obsolete. Especially since they follow the target, which makes them extremely accurate over long range. They can evade enemy fire and pack one heck of a punch.

Where do they have trouble hitting X-Wings: oh yes the big guns on the Death Star which are designed to destroy capital ships. That's like saying you should be able to hit a fly with a .357 Magnum. And even then: 30 Rebel ships were sent, only three came back (IIRC from A New Hope). This is because both the guns and the TIE Fighters took their toll.
Also, since when do missiles have to be intercepted? They can be jammed for example. Regardless, it'll be explained in Episode III, apparently (but then again its early days and it might all be bull.

Ever read Rogue Squadron?
They have that group of X-wings going up against ISDs more often then I have fingers to count.
And last time I checked, the TLs for the death star were the same as the ones on an ISD. If this is wrong, please tell me.
Also, and this is not an exact quote comming up, we have an Imperial officer on the Death star stating,"...They are so small they are evading our turbo lasers."
