I'm studying for the CPA exam. Have a nice summer, and if you're down just sit back and realize that Joe is off somewhere, doing much worse than you are.

Actually, I tend to use Ask Jeeves just out of force of habit.

They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong
But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red

Anyhoo... Yeah, I'm getting myself some Google stock. If nothing else, just to be able to say I have some. If it pans out, great. If not, well I'm not going to buy so much that it'd break me anyway.

No down payment or anything? Damn, you got a sweet deal. The Kernel wrote:I'm on the friends list, so I've got 1000 shares reserved at the initial price. I wish I could get more, but this is one hot IPO and they are being extremely stingy with even giving the employees options.

That's very typical for these sorts of IPO's--they have a list of friends and family that get the first dibs on the stock offering up to a certain amount of shares at the set initial price. The really nice thing is that on a stock this hot, it could easily double its initial share price in the first day and unlike the insiders, there is nothing to stop us from merely selling a few hours later and pocketing the profit.Joe wrote:No down payment or anything? Google has a larger search database though.Darth_Zod wrote:after discovering alltheweb.com, i rarely use google myself anymore. only real interest that's making me keep an eye on google is their gmail service that's being worked on.Gandalf wrote:As would I.

Isn't it likely that after going public Google will go the way of the thousands of engines before it; increasingly intrusive advertising, extra 'useful' features, news windows, general clutter etc?TrailerParkJawa wrote:Google is a great engine but all the hype of the IPO is just that hype.
Oh, did you know that shares reserved for management count as 10 shares when it comes to voting? Its nices to see they are setting themselves up to NOT be responsible to share holders.
Not if they stick to their word or have half a brain, the plain simple search and finding things approach has been their main drawl and why they do so well, bundling a ton of "features" just makes them another MSN and on the way out the doorIsn't it likely that after going public Google will go the way of the thousands of engines before it; increasingly intrusive advertising, extra 'useful' features, news windows, general clutter etc?

Not if they know what's good for them. However, PageRank has been defeated and Google seems to have no inclination to try and rework it. Besides, most of their revenue comes from Google Ads.Stark wrote:Isn't it likely that after going public Google will go the way of the thousands of engines before it; increasingly intrusive advertising, extra 'useful' features, news windows, general clutter etc?

Buying stock in a dotcom has been consigned to the "bad idea" section of my mind ever since the tremendous crash a few years back. I don't see Google's bubble going a couple of extra years without bursting, it wasn't long ago when Alta Vista was the top dog along with Lycos. It's too dynamic a medium to invest in, at least to me.
