Idiot flies light aircraft under Sydney Harbour Bridge
a light plane flew under the Harbour Bridge today. It was caught on camera and looked very much like a Cessna 152/172. Havn't heard a full report yet, but I suspect that the pilot won't be a pilot after today!
My guess is that the Civil Aviation Saftey Authority will come down so heavily on this one to set a strong precedent and send a strong message to pilots.
Fingers crossed that they don't turn the airspace there into a no-go zone. It's already a Restricted zone (R405a) with a CLL of 500ft because it's so close to the main International Airport for Sydney. It will be a pity to loose this air lane, as it's one of the most famous scenic routes in the country, with the Harbour Bridge, Opera House and Sydney City less than a mile away. with views like this viewable just outside your Cessna window!
It will be a HUGE shame to loose access to this as an average PPL pilot looking to have a nice day with a rental plane, because of the actions of a STUPID FUCKING IDIOT!

Someone flew a 152 under the harbour bridge? Thats not revoke your licence grounds, thats throw your ass in jail grounds! Especialy these days with people rather worried about aircraft leaving their flight plans and crusing around the CBD, possibly backed to the brink with C4...
CASA is going to come down on this idiot about as easy as fucking nuke!

Nay, those are shots from the airway that jenat-lai took his/herself while flying there.salm wrote:is the plane somewhere on the pictures? i can´t see it..
Howedar is no longer here. Need to talk to him? Talk to Pick.
Why is it a big deal?
Forgive my ignorance (I'm not a pilot) but why aren't you allowed to fly under bridges?

1. Its extreemly dangerous, a gust of wind at the wrong time, some slight overcorrecting could easily result in a crash.
2. The bridge constently has 6 full lanes of traffic in action with hundreds upon hundreds of people at any one time in an impact zone.
3. You have all manner of ships crusing around the harbour which at that altitude could easily be hit.
Its just commen sense.
4 It's against aviation law to fly less than 500 ft off the ground in a populated area not on approach to an airport.
5 Since september 11 2001, people have been a bit sensitive to unusual aircraft airborne movements around heavily populated cities, such as in this case. (even if it is a 4 seat Cessna single prop)
6 This is Sydney Harbour bridge, an Icon for all of Australia. Not only that but it doesn't have 6 lanes of traffic, it has
8 traffic lanes, 2 railway lines and a pedestrian footpath. Literaly a thousand (or more) people can be on the bridge at any given moment.
7 Finally the airspace is known as the "R405" for Restricted Area 405. Restricted areas have special procedures, as outlined in the ERSA (EnRoute Suppliment Ammendment) and for the 405, you must be at 500ft when west of the harbour bridge, and between 500ft and 1000ft when east of it. THe south shore of the harbour is inside controlled airspace and you must contact (and recieve clearance from) Sydney Approach frequency before flying south of the south shore. All aircraft inside the R405 must monitor Sydney Radar, and make radio calls whenever 1: Entering the airspace, by giving position, and intentions. ie "Sydney Radar and all stations Romeo 405, Cessna Mike Hotel Golf overhead Parramatta, tracking Ryde Bridge descending to 500ft, for entry into the Romeo 405 to cross Harbour Bridge for the Middle Harbour." The controller manning the Sydney Radar position will then plot you on his radar screen and may give you advice such as "Mike Hotel Golf, traffic is a Piper tracking westbound on Romeo 405 500ft, Enter Romeo 405, remain OCTA" Respond "Copy Traffic, will report visual, Mike Hotel Golf" and then fly to the north of the south coast, but as far to the :right: as possible of the track, keeping an eye out for the aircraft flying at the same altitude opposite direction, maintaining 500ft preferably over water, and will be looking to pass the opposite direction traffic to the right of him. (so he will be north of you) There may also be a 747-400 flying only 1000ft above you as you pass Gladesville bridge . once you pass Over the top of the harbour bridge (always keeping to the right (tracking just north of the south shore) and keeping a good lookout ahead and to the left) you then start to ease your plane upwards away from 500ft to somewhere between 500 and 1000, unless your planning on following "Victor 1" down the coast in which case you stay at 500.
The guy yesterday was just being a dickhead...
Hopefully we can still use this airspace in the future, But you can't guarrentee that even today there may have been something like this happen thismorning
"Sydney Radar and All stations Romeo 405, Cessna Charlie Lima Sierra overhead Parramatta, tracking Ryde Bridge descending to 500ft, for entry into the Romeo 405 to cross Harbour Bridge for the Middle Harbour."
"Charlie Lima Sierra, This is Sydney Radar, remain clear of the Restricted airspace, Entry into the Romeo 405 not approved, Track northwest and remain OCTA"

Well so it turns out "He" is "She"The group were on holiday from Queensland, and the pilot in command was a woman. She is apparently stating she was "unaware it is illegal to fly under the Sydney Harbour Bridge". Guess she now knows. Channel 7 had a crew in a restaurant overlooking the harbour. They had the camera there with them, and apparently the cameraman quickly dived for the camera and got a few seconds of the actual passage under the bridge. Looked like a high winged Cessna, but hard to pick the model variant, as the image was fairly small and at a distance. Wonder in reality what CASA will do. Heavy fine or licence cancellation. Chance of both I would say.
*Tries to stop self from saying something about women drivers*
Been reading a pilots message board, some of the quotes as so:
Unless the ATC clearance has changed recently its always been along the lines of "*callsign* cleared orbits of the harbour at 500ft, stay to the east of the bridge and north of the southern shore, advise operations complete", its a bit hard to stay to the east of the bridge when you fly under it! Twit.
How can she say she didnt know it was illegal??? In what country is it legal to fly under even any bridge! Nevermind the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
Licence cancellation and jail is my thought....stupidest thing I have ever heard!!

Yeah, but that was because of wing iceing made worse by pilot error during the takeoff. The plane's flight path took it over the bridge at farily low level anyway.Dennis Toy wrote:some of you might know a 737 known as Air Florida actually crashed ino a bridge here in Washington DC back in January 1982.

Of all the cities I've been too, Sydney is my favorite.Col. Crackpot wrote:on a side note, Sydney looks pretty fucking sweet!

Sydney is by far my favorite city. Its got everything a city should, is beautiful, well located, has excelent architecture, and the residents are very friendly with tourists.

I hope they jail her.
I saw what was apparently footage of what happened, looks like she came pretty close to hitting the bridge.
