"We were sitting there, cuddling on the couch, doing what we normally do, and we had a lingering kiss, probably three, four seconds, and this guy comes over and he's like, 'you can't do that here,'" Cournoyer said.

"I should be able to kiss my girlfriend anywhere I want," she said. "I shouldn't have to hide."

Tom Goodwin, owner of the pub, said he resented the couple publicly imposing their lifestyle on the patrons.

"I looked over and I see these two ladies necking. If their choice is to be with the same sex, then fine, good for them. But don't force it down everybody's throat. You don't have to come in and say 'I'm proud to be gay.'"

The provincial human rights commission wouldn't comment on the specific case, other than to say that someone can't be refused service based on their sexual orientation.

Six years ago, the Supreme Court of Canada ordered Alberta to write same-sex protection into its laws following the case of a teacher who was fired because he was gay.

This happened in Alberta, which is the Canadian equivliant of Utah rights-wise. So I'm not surprised at the owners behavior. I can only imagine his response if it had been two males.

Since when is necking imposing your sexuality on others? and if that is the case straight people shouldn't be allowed to do it as they maybe imposing their sexuality on any homosexuals in the bar.

if it's a private club then the owner has right to impose whatever rules he wants. That's why the American Boy Scouts can bar gays from joining because it's a private organization.

Maybe in the United States, but this is in Canada.
I'm not too clear at all on how this would stand up in court there.

It's not true for racial segregation, but it's true for matters of gay people as of right now. I don't know if it's true in Canada but it is in the US. Go check supreme court case "Boy Scouts of America v. Dale, 530 U.S. 640." The supreme court rules BSA is a private organization and has the right of "free association" so that the organization can admit or exclude anyone it wants to. Maybe it'll get overturned in the future like many landmark cases, but as of right now, private organizations can ban gays from joining.

I'm pretty sure that private organizations can ban gays and lesbians up here in the Great White North. The Royal Canadian Legion used to ban turbans from its halls until the courts ordered them to admit them. I'm pretty sure however that the Blarney Stone Pub is not a private club.

Personally I don't see what the big fuss is all about, other than you see an extra pair of boobies bouncing around. Other than that, they're just kissing... what's the big deal?

Which also applies to this pub owner: if they're only kissing each other, then so what? Mind you all this talk about double standards from fundies: I'm not sure it's a complete double standard*, because SOME fundies I am sure wouldn't want to see heteros going at it in public either. Doesn't change the fact that he was wrong to say they were "forcing" their lifestyle down everybody's "throats." What bullshit.

Correct. Private organizations and clubs do retain the right to refuse membership based on whatever criteria they choose, but restaurants are NOT included under these protections.

I'll second that. When I was in the military, my wife and I lived across from two lesbians. They were the ugliest human beings I've ever seen.
