Friends forever.

Post by Chardok »

http://www.nbc.com/Friends/index.html

Tonight will be a sad night for millions of Americans as they watch the last episode of Friends. Rachel is leaving for Paris, leaving Ross behind(?), Phoebe and her new "Lobster" will live happily ever after (with him handcuffed to a water pipe (Or is he at a "Gig"?) and Chandler and Monica welcome their new baby (Or do they?) Joey moves to L.A. (Prompting his debut of his new show, oddly titled: Joey.) This thread is for those of us who wish to express our sorrow at seeing this iconic american sitcom come to an end, to speculate about where it may lead, and what the future holds for the six people, who, for ten years, have been a thursday night tradition for nearly 20 million Viewers every single week (Like me.)

Someone, please give me a shoulder, I can't believe it's over...I've been watching this show since before I graduated high school...I'm sad and stuff....

Um, I've only ever seen maybe 3 episodes, so I can't exactly feel your pain. But have a nice time watching it.

I watched Friends here and there. I've found most of them quite entertaining.

Hats off to the crew of Friends and all. I missed the last episode and wasn't even paying attention to the final "warnings" of it ending, but I can sympathize with those who are going to truely miss it.

Oh, you mean that's tonight? :P

Seriously, I didn't know. But I do know how it can be when a show you like finally ends. Hope you enjoy the finale.

I suppose I used to see that show, but then abandoned it in favour of "The Simpsons"...

I am being proactive rather then reactive. I would rather put out the warning and prevent people from bashing Friends rather then have to come in here and clean up a mess.

Gee, is Friends having its series finale tonight? I didn't know; I only saw the commercials every commercial break for six hours straight today ;)

But I've seen some stuff from Friends; regardless of what you might think of the series, it is definitely an inextricable part of the American cultural landscape.

I think that's over-inflating it's importence just a little bit, Dalton.

Not really. I'm not a fan of the show (never actually watched a whole episode) but it's been on the air and popular for ten years. That's something of an accomplishment. It'll probably wind up being remembered with the likes of I Love Lucy, MASH, and the like.

Dalton's right. At least around here (the tri-state area), social nuances, behaviors, and "rules" portrayed on the show heavily influence teenagers' (especially girls) own social understanding.

In many ways, "Friends" has been a very popular behavioral model that teenagers have been taking lessons from and imitating for quite some time.

...And if anyone saw the Dateline special last night, there was a blurb in there about how many people finish off a joke like Chandler Bing (The answer-almost everyone, now) I know I do. I've even done his sort of "Talking with his hands" things

"Okay, *Hand in a fist* rock *Otherhand palm open towards fist* Hard place, *Pinky finger in between there hard place was* me"

Could I BE anymore sad? Yes I could. I'm going to go now.

I live with several women, i've had no choice but to watch many episodes of it. It was funny in places, outright dumb in others. I wonder what Joey will be like?

Didn't watch it much of it, but seeing a chunk of american culture die off is bittersweet~
"Right now we can tell you a report was filed by the family of a 12 year old boy yesterday afternoon alleging Mr. Michael Jackson of criminal activity. A search warrant has been filed and that search is currently taking place. Mr. Jackson has not been charged with any crime. We cannot specifically address the content of the police report as it is confidential information at the present time, however, we can confirm that Mr. Jackson forced the boy to listen to the Howard Stern show and watch the movie Private Parts over and over again."

On a related topic, does every American comedy show have to have canned laughter? Do audiences need cues to know when to laugh or something or is some joker forever secretly placing that crap in every show?

At least The Simpsons doesn't suffer that.

I had fun going up to people and saying "Are you watchin the Friends finale tonight? I'm not, because I'm allergic to television shows that suck!"

I'm bitter over this because it means absolutely no one will come to the school talent show tonight.

I liked how Seinfeld ended, actually.

Bertie: I suppose. I'm not really part of those social groups or movements, so I've never noticed any direct influence from the show onto behavior and mannerism.

I just think such a regard is slightly ironic, considering that it was more of the reverse for many of the show's seasons: heavily borowing from present and past pop culture and niche areas for the establishment of the programme's tone.

Anyway, I like the show alright, though I'm more of a fan of about the first five or so seasons than the second five. It kind of irritated me how everything kind of wore down and out, such as the characters becoming boarderline caricatures, the continuously dumbing down of Joey, and the lack of continuity on the writers' part (seriously, it's really bad at times).
