"It is reactive armor" The Atlantean ambasador said

"We have a crystaline hull, very good at deflecting energy, but it is brittle, so what we do is have layers of explosives in our hulls that when hit, explode outward keeping projectiles from piercing the hull. The hull then regenerates over it... Crystals grow very easily we may be able to retrofit your ships"

"They explode outward... so if we were in a fleet formation situation we could be litteraly exploding into each other?"

The wounded General Fedayn leaned forward.

"I may be somewhat lacking in this area, but, what keeps the thing from exploding when it is hit by a energy weapon?"

"Both ideas are foolish."

The booming voice of the oversize Ouster, Jerac su Fassar, filled the room, quelling the other conversations.

"Your reactive armor idea could not possibly work. A chemical explosive capable of stopping a fractional-C kinetic strike? Absolutely ridiculous. Such a defense would be useful only against shrapnel attacks or directed explosives." (/ooc true dat, modern reactive armor is useless against sabots.)

"As for the sidewall plans, remember, one does not simply "Retrofit" a vessel with sidewalls. they are bulky peices of equipment requiring the installation of nodes up and down the defended vessel's sides. Additionally, massive reconstruction of a ship's interior would be necessary to fit the generator and the bracings necessary to absorb the kinetic impact. The plan is cumbersome, if not strictly unworkable. Current shielding systems are certainly more than capable of dealing with kinetic weapons as efficiently a they deal with energy weapons- ours do, at least. If your own defenses lack in the field of kinetic protection, we would be glad to sell you more effective shielding technology."

Turning his eyes across the room, the massive, scarred Ouster rumbled again.

"I suggest we turn this talk away from searching for an easy answer, and address the real problem- we must find the source of these machine-ships, and destroy it."

The crystaline hull refract the energy away from the explosives for the most aprt(the crystaline hull works a lot like energy shielding)

"I have my fleet doing salvage operations, looking for computer cores or anything along that lines. But at the moment it looks like we'll have to sweep the whole damn galaxy to fine them. Unless you have some information?" The Lord Protector asked.

Probably.. you dont seem to understand... The reactive armor isimbedded in the crystaline hull. The crystaline hull refracts energy weapons, while the reactive armor under it stops kinetic weapons from reaching the main hull. When the crystaline armor is damaged, it regenerates.

"Of course. Wisdom, indeed. But we must also remember that Earth lies in thee core of your Known Space. A large fleet, striking towards it, may have been recognized, or noticed. We must investigate, searching for reports, visiting worlds which have reported strange vessels moving through the region. We should evaluate the approach vectors of the first Machine vessel seen, and attempt to narrow the search. The mission will never be an easy one, but we can turn it from a wild goose chase into a possibility."

"Additionally, we should inform all of these Machines, their methods, and their technology, so any furthur intervention they make among the fiefdoms or colonies will be noted."

"Roughly, only a bit bigger. The probe is designed to scour systems for life and technology, not scan a ship as it goes by between FTL bursts..."

Tacer Drealaan winced, he wasn't a naval officer, but he certainly knew enough to voice his opinion.

"I would suggest we commission an investigation of all combat zones and derbies fields for anything we can get our hands on. Perhaps we can locate possible worlds they have been on by what they are composed of, perhaps some materials which are no common to this part of space, or at least found on planetoids few and far between. I would seriously doubt anything remains of the machine communication equipment or processing core, but with such a huge number of combatants it is not unreasonable that some equipment escaped in such a condition that we could learn about it." his opinion was not a military one, but valid non the less.

"If we can learn more about the machines, we can learn where they came from; even how to combat them. Emp, I assume, would be extremely effective against these things, perhaps we can exploit that."

"Agreed," said Admiral Blessinger. "We need to find them now, before its too late. We don't have the time or resources to spend refitting entire fleets with equipment schemes that might not even work."

yes side walls are an excelent idea which is why we have a ship project said sheild however due to the quck regeneration rait of the crystals the speed with which a hole is punched is greatly reduced.

On your second point while we are compleatly willing to defend your planets and forces beside you, however we cannot in good hunt down and destroy every last one of these creatures. It goes against some of our oldest and most honored beliefs.

The Admiral did not seem fazed.

"WE understand what you are saying. My full proposal would be this. As is coming up on the viewer now we would keep a large concentration of ships far back from our home worlds, possibly in our bases in deep space. Some ships would be refurbished, others would be sent to hunt for planets from which they came. This would allow for us to find systems, be ready for us to hunt them down, and have specialized fleets dedicated for battle against them."

"Agreed," said Admiral Blessinger. "We need to find them now, before its too late. We don't have the time or resources to spend refitting entire fleets with equipment schemes that might not even work."
"A wise voice, Admiral." Jerac nodded slightly, a sign of great respect coming from one of the only three full Admirals in the Hajr. "

"WE understand what you are saying. My full proposal would be this. "Allow me to suggest an alternative. All vessels are assigned to eitheer patrol the home worlds, or are sent out in fast reaction forces towards the rim. Meanwhile, we will question Floaters for news of passing fleets, and your own assorted intelligence agencies will do the same on planets and among the Bound populations across Known Space. We will try in that manner to ascertain the direction from which the enemy came, and then use the resources and time which would otherwise be squandered rebuilding our fleets to produce great fleets of robot-probes to search the area for signs of the Machine-Enemy."
