Today is the Victory day.
This is the day when Russian forces achieved ultimate victory over the Nazi Germany.

To not hijack the thread: What has happened today in Chechnya is very sad. I am not in the mood to celebrate.

Sorry folk, the gif is gone :( I never checked it's size, it looked cool. :)

Yes, the Chechnya incident is very sad. I'm actually not in the mood to talk about that, since it's bad. Terrorists are getting nastier. I was also concerned about Spain. :( Too bad these things start to succeed really.

And yes, all normal Germans are glad that Germany lost the war. Well, not that perhaps, but the fact they got rid of that bastard Hitler.

The celebration was good, albeit darkened by the terrorist assasination. :( Damn the terrorists.

salm,
yeah... It's pretty much obvious for Germany losing the war was good.
Those who think otherwise are revanshist fools or neo-nazi bastards.

Im half German, and I obviously think it was for the best that Germany lost, but I will not celebrate for Stalinist Russia, ever, IMO they were no better than Nazi Germany.

Russian people are NOT stalinist, as well as Germans are not hitlerist.
And Russia's concept was better than Germans. Nazism is a bad concept from the start. Not to mention who was the agressor.

mixed opinion on this - on one hand Germany got rid of Hitler, and got considerabe rebuilding in the process. howver it cost them millions of people. On the other,It cost Russia millions of people and the destruction f a hostile ideology, yet subjugated Eastern Europe and East Germany as well, with thousands disappearing immediately after hostilities and throughout.

Maybe celebration is the wrong word......

Strawman, I never said anything about current day Russians being Stalinist. Im talking about not celebrating the victory of a then horrible regime ruled by a horrble "General Secretary" who's oh so glorious and victorious soldiers viciously abused my German grandmother and grandfather (plus all the other shit the Soviets ever did). Also keep in mind that while Germany attacked first, Russia was going to attack Germany (a few years later around 1943) so the "Germany = agressor!" argument in that instance is moot as far as im concerned.

I don't care if they contributed to the fall of Nazism since in the end it was really just one evil dictatorship beating another. Thats history, thats the way I feel and no argument is ever going to change that. I don't care if you think im an asshole or ignorant or whatever either.

So they did actually send my grandfather to labor camps, the Soviets. They did. So what?

If you try to accuse all the soldiers who won as being "stalinist" (at the time of 1941), then all german soldiers should be named "fascist" and killed therefore. Am I right?

The troops were not Stalin's, and they did not die for Stalin, but rather for the homeland. The Soviet regime was not good. But it was the victory of a people, not of a regime. As well as the victory was not over Germans, as a people, to exterminate them, but over the regime.
Soviet people vs. nazi regime, not soviet regime vs. german people, that is not so hard to comprehend.

If you would rather preserve nazism than communism... uh... too bad.

"So what?" Thats just fucking sad. Im sure your grandfather would love to hear you say that to his face.

Never said all the soldiers were stalinist, but their were many who bought into the soviet propaganda at the time which essentially encouraged attrocities against civilians and captured enemy troops.
Soviet people vs. nazi regime, not soviet regime vs. german people, that is not so hard to comprehend.
I don't have a problem with that, but to me the actual history goes more like soviet regime vs nazi regime and to celebrate over that is pointless. If however it is in fact a celebration of the people specifically and not also the gov't then thats fine.
If you would rather preserve nazism than communism... uh... too bad.
I would rather preserve NEITHER of them idiot.

Icehawk,
my grandfather was a German but he was not a Nazi. And he does not like the Soviet regime either, but he admits the Russians did a great job. And - yes - I have spoken to him about that.
Never said all the soldiers were stalinist, but their were many who bought into the soviet propaganda at the time which essentially encouraged attrocities against civilians and captured enemy troops.
It was not Soviet propaganda, but hate. Hate for millions of civilians killed by the occupants. Even as this goes, the atrocities were nothing compared of that of the German (SS particulary).
Captured enemy troops weren't treated lightly, but their condition was not as half as bad as what the Germans did to the captured in the KZs... It is proved by the very fact of my existance :)
If however it is in fact a celebration of the people specifically
That is. Governments change, but the V-Day remains. It always considered a national holiday. In fact, Putin said that the Russian people could find the strength to prevail despite the fact that Stalin opressed them, not because of it.
I would rather preserve NEITHER of them idiot.
Rather than calling me an idiot you may have thought about the fact that it was impossible to preserve neither. And again, this war is never called to be a Soviet war, or whatever.
It is the Great Patriotic War, people fighting for homeland and all that stuff.

Happy Victory Day. This is probably the response Stas was hoping for. Btw, in case you didn't notice, the rest of the world celebrates V-E day on May 8th. Russia celebrates on May 9th, so technically Stas is correct. That day is dedicated to Russia's victory. All mention of other countries is customarily omitted. 8)

Have a very nice day.

Happy Victory Day. If the Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder can accomodate the Russians on Victory Day, Stas is perfectly justified. 8)

Considering what the USSR went through to achieve victory, so fucking what if they don't mention their allies.
