Is nuclear war inevitable?
Considering the slow but noticable increase in nations gaining nuclear technology [Israel, India, Pakistan etc] is it inevitable that these nations, with deep-rooted hatred of their neighbours and nuclear levels that would not lead to a MAD type situation, will one day resort to a nuclear exchange? If so, which nations are the most likely to take part, and what would the repercussions for the rest of the world be?

Noone besides N.Korea is that crazy, and if it even looks like they will use them... S.Korea becomes an island.

Well I don't think that North Korea's missiles can range that far yet. I believe that they can hit Japan and Hawaii though.Stark wrote: Every time someone says things like that, I imagine hordes of American schoolchildren hiding under their desks...

Actually I just found this which states that they can only range over Japan. Missiles that can reach the continental USA are under works.Uraniun235 wrote:North Korea's missiles can, IIRC, reach Alaska and Hawaii. Their next generation of missile will supposedly have the range to strike targets on the American West Coast.

Which is still moot in a roundabout way. If NK ever grows the stones to threaten us with nukes, then the U.S. gets itself a new glassworks. or SK becomes an island. I don't even think Kim Long Dong is that stupid. though I STILL wonder what shrubby was thinking...that is to say...how in the world saddam hussein was more of a "Gathering threat" than KJI. Not too many nations would be saddened to see him gone, whereas by obliterating Hussein, we've managed to piss off every Islamic nutball on the planet. And that was before the prison scandal.Cpl Kendall wrote:Actually I just found this which states that they can only range over Japan. Missiles that can reach the continental USA are under works.

I have a feeling that within my lifetime there will be another nuclear exchange, but I don't think that it's inevitable.

thankfully there aren't very many (if any) nation leaders that want to risk the exchange of nuclear weaponry due to the damage it causes far more than regular bombs. for the most part (save a few radical extremists) it's not really something that needs to be worried about. nobody wants to be retaliated back with nukes when there's so many places that have them that could do so.
