The best endings reinforce the series and give it new meaning; with these criteria, the only finales I would class as better than just another episode, where people use the word 'goodbye' more often, are

Cowboy Bebop - He went to find out if he was still alive; and he wasn't. Brilliant; closes all the arcs, hero and villian go out the way the always should have, and charged with significance. I wish I had that indian guy's PSOne tho.

Blake's 7 - Daring rebels gunned down in a carefully planned government sting operation. It doesn't get much grittier than this; the hero even symbolically killed the fallen hero.

Blackadder goes Forth always holds a close spot in my mind but Blackadder the First has a much better ending sutable for a the show

hmm. not too many people that watch the series on here that i'm aware of, but one great ending for an anime series is tekkaman blade. in the end Blade finally wins in the battle against Darkon, but as a result has to kill most of his family (which were turned into teknomen), and nearly dies himself. at the end of the last episode his memory was pretty much gone entirely and he's shown in a wheelchair. actually a nice change of pace from the typical 'hero makes it out without a scratch' style of show.

ohhhhhh..... the ending of The Kingdom, the origional danish series, with Death riding in the back of Ravens ambulance.

"What are you doing back there? What i'm doing is very dangerous!"
"Oh i know"
"What are you doing back there?!"
"My job"
"...... Who are you?"
"I'm Death ..... busy, busy night."

The look of sheer pants wetting terror in Ravens eyes just made it for me!
What looks like a remake of it is starting on BBC2 tommorow i hope it will rock as much as the origional.

This is one of my favorite endings ever. There's just so many cool touches.

I should add that Q's final lines in this episode sent shivers down my spine.

"That is the journey that awaits you. Not mapping stars and charting nebulae. But exploring the unknown possibilities...of existence."

And his final line...

"See you.....out there."

First, I have to admit that I haven't cared about that many shows, so my own opinions are biased towards that few ones that I've seen (mostly Sci-Fi).

TNG's is probably the best from a story perspective, because it managed to tie the begining to the ending in such a powerful way. Moreover, you got to see -beyond- the ending. It's too bad that they went on to make soooo many sucky movies.

B5 is the best from an emotional perspective. And the scene of the station slowly blowing up is the best visual that I know of. Again, it's too bad they went on to make more B5 related material.

If we want to can define "series" loosly enough to include movies, then ST:TOS wins hands down with ST:6. It's powerful in every way, and the speech at the end (about passing the baton to a new generation) along with the ships flying into the sunset is very powerful in every respect.

No idea, didn't see it as I was so upset about them fucking it over long before the finalé which occured without fanfare.

And even though it's a bit iffy I have to agree ST:6 which served as the finale for TOS.

They all felt that they wrapped up and not left open for sequel rampage(though leave it to B&B to try for ST)

Amen to that, I think it was Picard's realisation that for all his trickery and games, Q cared about humanity and there was that respect for each other in the final moments which I loved.

Wasnt very pleased with DS9 finale, Voyager we shall not speak of.

I thought I had seen the last ep. of B5 until it was mentioned here about "Sleeping in Light"

I saw that ep. and... well *wipes away tears*
