The exceedingly fast car and motorcycle thread

Post by Sea Skimmer »

We all know it; no one wants to drive a hybrid with a 75hp engine in it. We all want something that adds a zero to that, has a price most easily expressed in significant fractions of a million dollars and can go 100mph in second gear. Thus we shall have a thread to discuss the likes of the Dauer 962, Mclaren F1, Bugatti Veyron, Jaguar XJ220 and Ducati 916 personally I think going faster then that thing on a bike is just plain insane and you might as well strap on rockets for even more speed

I must admit a certain fondness for the Plymouth Prowler. Not stock you understand, but with a Viper 8.0 liter V-10 and matching gearbox jammed in (yes, they do fit).

A friend of mine had an uncle who owned a Bugatti EB110. Damn fine machine, but a pity he took it to SA when he moved to his personal villa. Just down the road from me is a guy with a Bentley Turbo R, you know, the sort of car that is the size of a limousine with similar aerodynamics but which can outperform a Ferrari with ease.

Well, if I wanted top speed bragging rights I'm getting myself a Callaway Sledgehammer Corvette, that thing will do over 250mph, which is pretty damn fast. Unfortunately it's not geared for stoplight contests and barely breaks 4 seconds in the 0-60. For that I'll probably need a twin-turbo Lingenfelter Corvette, about 750hp with good gearing ought to kill damn near anything I run across. And there's nothing like the nice sound you get from 427 cubic inches of V-8 engine. VRROOOOM!!!

Pity it looks like every other Corvette out there.

If I'm getting a supercar, I'll get one that has style as well as performance.

A Bentley Turbo R can out ACCELRATE a Ferrari, but it manuvers like the Baptist church bus with an add-on sport suspension. Give me a 911 Carrera Turbo with a six speed on a winding road and i'll bitchslap your Bentley all day. PAH! British sports cars..... the Trifecta of sports car perfection is Italy, Germany and the United States in that order.

It can have higher top speed too, but the trade-off obviously is agility, but on the autobahn, that matters not since speed and agility aren't really good bedfellows.

I wouldn't mind having a go in one though.

I believe in the stealth car, the wolf in sheep's clothing so to speak. You can have your nice fancy styling & good looks, but I'll take raw kick-ass performance over fancy-schmancy looks anyday. Besides, how can you argue with 898hp and a 254.7mph top speed?

And if you have gobs of disposable income, and live in a place like, say Alabama, Kentucky or Saskatchewan you get something like this!

8.3 liters of redneck muscle!

I've always been really fond of the Suzuki GSXR-750. I know the literbikes are faster nowadays, but the 750 has a special place in my heart. I had a Honda Superhawk-996 and that thing was stupid easy to ride fast. Of course it could go fast for about 160 miles before you had to refill the thimble that passed for a gas tank, but that's the price of making a bike about as wide as a deck of cards.

Ogrek is beyond strategy.

TVR Speed 12. Those fancy looks enable it to accelerate effortlessly to the 250mph limit. Power gets you only so far, hence why muscle cars aren't my style if I wanted speed.

The typical wedge shape works, but there are better designs coming in all the time such as the Viper which was quite radical for a US design, but none will break 250 without a gas turbine.

Pretty much the only cars I'm familiar with are the ones on Gran Turismo 3 (so they sorta don't count). I have about six cars in my stable boosted up over a thousand horsepower, and at least another half a dozen above 800hp. Phun!

Let me guess, one is the Suzuki Escudo, right?

Nope. Zonda C12S, 3000GT VR4 Turbo (which set the top speed record of 257 MPH!), and some I can't remember right now since Conrad's in the middle of an Enduro race in a yellow F687/s (Indy Car)...

Something like that, except I don't brag about it (and I'll say my first and last attempt at driving anything resembling a car ended in a crash because I couldn't reach the brake pedal: It was a go-kart, and I was 11!)

250mph? Most of the sources I've read quote it at around 200-220 depending on the gearing, with one source saying 240. Besides, the 0-100kph time is rather sad at 2.9 seconds, a Lingenfelter 427 twin-turbo will do that in 2 seconds flat, and it'll hit 100mph in 4.33 seconds.

BTW, the Sledgehammer Corvette is conservatively tuned for everyday driving, with more aggressive cams & a bit more turbo boost it'll easily make over 1000hp and add a few more mph to that top speed.

One of the drivers from TVR got it around 251mph after several runs (their factory and testing ground are half an hour from me).

I see mixed sources, but given ideal conditions, it can hit 245+ if need be, but such speed is excessive for any car and simply only something you'd do for a record. The Le Mans for instance only had cars reach around 210mph and even less after several modifications to the track and engine specs. A shame, but I guess it was getting a tad risky.

I see. I did think it was a bit odd that it wouldn't go at least 10-15mph faster than the speeds which were listed on various sites. And there's no such thing as excessive speed as long as it stays rubber side down on the roads.

The stupid ass chicanes in the middle of the Mulsanne Straight really pisses me off, I thought the point of having a nice long straight was so that cars could go fast. Some people say the damn chicanes actually cause more accidents from the cars suddenly slowing down & hitting each other or losing downforce. Who knows, I hate the damn things and think they just clog up traffic & make things less fun.

Then get a few million and fork out for the Thrust SSC. I think you'll find practicality comes in at some point. ;)

The last cars to really get anything out of it were Toyotas and Nissans topping 220, but that was '99 or something like that. Now the longest straight is a mile, if that so it's more balanced I guess in terms of driver skill rather than flat out speed and engineering excellence.

Still, I'd love to see them go back to the original track plan.
