Your ideal election
Okay, America seems to have a thing with elections sucking ass lately. In 2000, we had Bush and Gore, and it was kind of a crap shoot. Now we have Bush and Kerry at a time where people don't want Bush, but they're not exactly sure about Kerry either.
So fuck those three. What would be your ideal election? What two candidates running from the two major parties would seriously make you consider both of them and have to make a tough call based on each one's virtues, rather than which one sucks less? Note that ineligible candidates (like Clinton or other former two-term presidents) aren't eligible here.
For me, I was thinking McCain from the Republican party (though he's now an independent) and maybe Clark from the Democrats.

I'd like President John McCain and Vice President Rudy Gulianni....or vise versa. The token opposition would be Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.) for President and oh, i dunno Max Cleland (D-GA) for VP.

I can't honestly say that there are any Democrats out there right now that I'd have a hard time picking over a decent Republican/conservative candidate. But as much of that is problem with the Democratic party as anything.
Candidates I'd like to see:
John McCain
Damn I wish he would have had the nomination in the last go around. He actually seemed to care about the issues and have some integrity. Not to mention I really would like to have seen campaign finance reform of some sort.
John Engler
An actual fiscal conservative for the most. He's also proven he can handle reforming welfare and other social programs as well as handling the economy. As another plus he doesn't have the close ties to the religious right that many conservatives have. I hope the talk of him running in 2008 is true.
Rudy Gulianni
Need I say more?

You know, I really liked the 96 election. Bob Dole and Clinton were both strong candidates and this was prior to much of the Clinton sex scandals, so the issues were still the big part of the debate.
Today I'd have to agree that I'd like to see McCain run (he's the only Republican I'd seriously consider voting for) as the man simply has integrity about his job and somehow manages to rise above most aspects of partisan politics (though I'm very disapointed that he's campaigning for Bush right now). As for a Democratic opponent...well, isn't that the problem with the Democratic party today? Lack of strong leadership?

that was their problem before Clinton as well: no leadership. Mondale? Dukakis? Heck even now.... Kerry is Dukakis without the backbone.

He did run for President, as a Dixiecrat. He got 39 electoral votes.
Another thing; if during the Florida re-re-recount fiasco hadn't been settled by the time it was Bill Clinton's time to leave office, Strom Thurmond would have become the President for a while.

I'm studying for the CPA exam. Have a nice summer, and if you're down just sit back and realize that Joe is off somewhere, doing much worse than you are.

Right, that slipped my mind for a second. Still, in today's climate it would be hard for him to avoid being labeled as anything but a racist.Joe wrote:He did run for President, as a Dixiecrat. He got 39 electoral votes.

It would have gone first to Dennis Hastert, Speaker of the House, but he'd have refused it so as not to lose his position. Then it would have done to Strom, and he'd probably have taken it.Another thing; if during the Florida re-re-recount fiasco hadn't been settled by the time it was Bill Clinton's time to leave office, Strom Thurmond would have become the President for a while.

It would be wierd, but it would be even worse than the situation we have now. If you want it to be even wierder, throw a Zombie Richard Nixon and a Zombie Paul Wellsone running together on a Zombie Party ticket. Their biggest issue would be "BRAAAAINNNSSS!"Andrew J. wrote:Dennis Kucinich vs. Orrin Hatch, just because it would be so weird.

Dead people aren't eligible for the Presidency. Although, I wouldn't be surprised to see his corpse win another senate seat. I can just sorta imagine the praise we would get at his first deathday celibration. "This corpse would have been right in the 50's! It would have been right at the founding of the nation, and we wouldn't have all of these problem! We're going to go on to win! Sorry, I have no idea why I wrote that, and even less idea why I'm about to hit Submit.

Chomsky vs Nader
"Right now we can tell you a report was filed by the family of a 12 year old boy yesterday afternoon alleging Mr. Michael Jackson of criminal activity. A search warrant has been filed and that search is currently taking place. Mr. Jackson has not been charged with any crime. We cannot specifically address the content of the police report as it is confidential information at the present time, however, we can confirm that Mr. Jackson forced the boy to listen to the Howard Stern show and watch the movie Private Parts over and over again."
