Bush Praises Rumsfled

Bush delivered his statement at the Pentagon amid the continuing controversy over abuses committed by U.S. troops at Abu Ghraib prison and calls for Rumsfeld's resignation.

Despite such calls, aides say Bush's support for Rumsfeld has not wavered.

Rumsfeld, Secretary of State Colin Powell, the Joint Chiefs of Staff and CIA Director George Tenet were to participate in the private briefing at the Pentagon, and Gen. John Abizaid was expected to join the briefing via satellite.

"The conduct that has come to light is an insult to the Iraqi people and an affront to the most basic standards of decency and morality," Bush said of the scandal.

"One difference between democracies and dictatorships," he said, is that free countries confront such behavior "openly and directly."

Bush also may be bracing for the leaking of more photos -- and perhaps videos -- of the prison abuses. Photos have been trickling out through various media outlets over the past couple of weeks.

This guy will never admit to any wrongdoing in himself or his staff will he? So much for taking responsibility for his underlings.

EDIT: I also like how he says that Democracies confront information such as this "open and directly" when the White House leaned on the press for months NOT to release it.

by pressuring the press not to release evidence of abuse and then scapegoating a few low ranking reservists when the story can no longer be suppressed. The Iraqis must be blown away by the benefits of democracy.

What was the point of Bush’s unconvincing apology on the US’s middle eastern propaganda channel a few days ago if he follows up by saying that the guy many people believe to be responsible is doing "a superb job"?

Its almost as if they’ve given up given up trying to win the “hearts and minds” of the Arab world.

I liked a few weeks ago when Bush was asked during a press conference what he's done wrong, anything, and he would not admit to messing up even the tiniest damned thing.

How can Bush say he's against gay marriage when he and Rumsfeld managed to get past this little lover's quarrel so quickly? It's so sweet! When Bush got on national TV and professed his undying love for Rumsfeld, I was, like, omigod! He's sooooo in love!!!
