Could You make a Friday the 13th Video Game??

Post by THEHOOLIGANJEDI »

I was thinking sometime Back about how a F13 video Game could work. Post some ideas on how the game could work. I'll post some later when I remember them.

There was an NES game of Friday the 13th when I was a kid. You ran around Crystal Lake, throwing rocks at zombies and trying to get to the other counselors before Jason does. It really, really sucked.

You are Jason. You walk around. You kill people in various cool and inventive ways. Then you die. In the sequel, you get resurrected (last two are optional).

Rinse and repeat.

Yeah, the NES F13 sucked, but you'd be amazed just how good one of my friends got at it. Funniest part was his poorly animated weapons, like the dreaded toothbrush. Not sure what that one was suppose to be.

That is a good idea for a Friday the 13th game.

Naturally, I am the only one here really capable of answering this thread's topic. :P

Without setting any features on stone (especially since I don't know many specifics of the F13 series and I'm going by common factors and staples of horror films for this design outline), I'd say the best bet would be to design something sort of reminiscent of Resident Evil, at least in the sense of being a 3rd-person action game. I could be fully 3D, but I'd recommend it keeps fixed camera angels, since a 360' free-moving camera really gimps out the suspense of a horror game.

Players should be able to play as either the potential victims (actual name pending) or Jason Voorhees himself (or both, for some good ol' competitive play). The victims' objectives should be rather straight-forward; survive for X amount of time, get to X location, find and collect X items, etc, or sometimes combinations of objectives. Naturally, if they kill Jason, they win (till next time, anyway). His objectives would be simply to slaughter his victims in whatever way deemed necessary/amusing.

Jason should be able to pick up just about any blunt, sharp, or pointy object, use it effectively as a weapon to brutally and quickly main and kill in various fashions, and then put the body up somewhere to scare the shit out of whoever sees it. :D Some limited ability to move from area to area w/o being easily seen or heard might be useful in addition, or at least more freedom of movement (though I guess when you're the Crazy Murderer on camp grounds, that might come as an inherent bonus).

The victims' abilities should be definitely be focused on hiding, running/dodging and generally getting out of the way, and manipulating the environment to their advantage (moving furniture, helping teammates up off the ground, setting up barricades/mini traps/better hiding spots, and the like).

It may sound rather lackluster that, after a guy with a hockey mask and a machete kills one of your teammates, kicks their head down the stairs, and then shuts all the lights off, your only response is to send someone out to turn them back on, but keep in mind one of the great appeals of horror movies is that people like to be scared. There's a certain thrill of running for your life and trying to lose the murderer's tail after narrowly escaping with minor injuries, heading into the bathroom for a first-aid kit, and not knowing whether or not the murderer is hiding behind the shower curtain or just outside the next room cause he might jump out at any moment and fucking kill you!!

If you could just easily kill the enemy by going head-to-head with him, you lose all sense of suspense and fear, and doing things like hiding under a bed is just inane and monotonous. But when your best offense is Throw Object and his worst is Snap Neck, and he's right there in the same room, you're going to stay under that bed, you're going to count the seconds till the time is up, you're going to hope one of your teammates either finishes the objective or distracts him, and you're going to hope he goes away, but until then, the adrenaline rush is intense, trust me. Though if you've got guts and not one to sit back and be the victim, you could probably be moderately successful taking risks like making a run for it at in opportune moments or trying to ambush Jason.

That's the basics for now, some details about levels, missions, or gameplay types can be worked out from there. My bet would be that if there's a strict single-player campaign of some sort, it should run from objective to objective, and not level-by-level (gameplay should be continuous rather than be restricted to the 'complete all objectives and then do a new set of objectives when everything resets for the next level' crap of some more arcade-ish games).

What I think is a must in my opinion, would be for there to be long-term consquences for any short-term actions you take. For example, using other people as a distraction might make it easier for you to escape a situation, but later on those same people could have helped you out, or those people might survive to pay you back ().
A similar thing would be you can set up obstructions (eg. chairs, couches, bring down a tunnel by blowing up it's supports, etc), which might delay Jason, but later on you might find that you need to escape in that same direction.

Actually, if we're trying to be true to the movies, you wouldn't be able to play Jason until the second game. In the first, you'd play as Jason's mother.

That's the basic cause/effect principle in a survival situation. Certain actions that have an immediate benefit can often put you on a disadvantage later on, and vice-versa. Same deal with helping out your teammates.

Anyone play Alien Vs Predator 2? there's a totally kick-ass multiplayer mode called 'Hunt', iirc, where everyone starts as Marines, the first one killed starts the next round as a Xenomorph, and everytime the Xenomorphs kill another Marine, they start off the next round as a Xenomorph, so less and less humans are trying to stay alive fighting off more and more aliens with each round, and the player alive the longest wins. I've played it over LAN quite a few times, and despite being a competition for surviving the longest, it really promotes tons of teamwork and watching eachother's backs.

Bah, it was 10 minutes of combining Resident Evil 3 with Home Alone for the NES. I'm just not promoting it that way. :P

Real easy way would be to make a SC map, make Jason a Zealot, everyone else starts out as civ, and can switch units, everyone is a one hit one kill, no matter what. Jason on the other hand can take shit loads of punishment. Balancing it would be dificult though. Giving the victims units that can be cased down by Jason, or giving Jason special triggers that allow him to stand up hit and run from something like a vulture.

Yeah, and in the (IIRC) 5th you'd be some lame-ass impersonating Jason. But that would be no fun.

That would make a good Multiplayer scenario, but as the main aspect of the Game it would tire easy.

I like it!! It kinda goes along with what I would do with a F13 game. If you fail a mission it's not game over. You can either play it again or continue as a different character later. I'll further explain it Later...

I like it too, very similar to my idea. Very resident evilish. But I think you should have the option of toggling between first and third person aspect. Oh hell let me get to my description.

My F13 game:

Separate the game into 7-10 Parts that each separated various years apart. In each of these individual parts there are 10 or more different chapters(levels). If you fail a mission or die you can either switch character, restart the mission, or continue and let the story unfold.

Part 1:
You are a character placed in Crystal Lake and the first chapter is revolving around Jason's Mom being the killer and trying to figure out what's and survive the night. Bonus points for killing Jason's at the end.

Part 2 would be Jason doing the killing. If you alow the survivor to avoid being killed by Jason in revenge for his mother's death, and try to warn the Authorities of Jason.

Of course it would be rated Mature for Violence/Gore, language and Nudity/sexual content.

Damn that's all I have so far. I'll be back with more.
