Nintendo DS vs. Sony PSP: FIGHT!

Post by phongn »

Alrighty, at E3, the Nintendo DS was released -- their new portable gaming system with dual-screens. It is more powerful than an N64 yet small enough to fit in a largish pocket.

Sony has finally brought out their Playstation Portable and it too looks good.

If you want pics, use Google :p

Wow, the PSP is truly gorgeous...

EDIT: Here are some really good and huge pics of the PSP:

Interesting, although I wonder if the two screen perspective thing will cause problems for developers or if they will even bother to make much use of it. An interesting idea though.

Personally im still leaning toward the PSP as it is more compact and I prefer the 16x9 display. The dual screen GB DS may very well have a higher price because of its extra LCD screen as well though we'll have to wait and see.

Watching the DS in action (in comaprision to the PSP, who up till now has only shown movies), I think DS will win, HUGE battery life, no extravagent price, and look at the games!

I have my dounts about the PSP. One of which is the fact that Sony have yet to show that it will be more durable than the PS2.

What's wrong with it, specifically?

I love it, personally. It's understated and fits with Sony's current design ethics for their other products.

To me, it looks good, but it also looks like it'd be a pain to hold.

The DS looks pretty sick. From what I hear, it'll have an IM-type service within its 30-ft range, and it allows for wireless multiplay, and you can play multiplayer even if you haven't bought the cartridge. And the lower screen can be used as a touch-screen. On top of that, it's backwards compatible with old Gameboy/Gameboy Advanced cartridges.

They say it has voice control, too, but I've always thought that was kind of a lame gimmick.
And you may ask yourself, 'Where does that highway go to?'

The DS just seems to gimicky, though (that and it looks like it's made by Playskool). Then there's Nintendo's little platform dedication problem to deal with...

Based on what I've read, the most recent photos of the DS are of a functioning prototype mockup and the final design has yet to be decided upon.

Both look very promising to me. The games being developed for the PSP will be probably be very competitive with whatever Nintendo puts out for the DS. Metal Gear:Acid and GT4 for example. On the other, hand the DS can run games that are in-between the N64 and the GCN in quality so expect a glut of retro ports (good and bad) for it. In all likelyhood, I will end up buying both. Unless the price point for the PSP is too ridiculous, given all the features Sony plans on shipping it with.

Has their been any concrete hardware specs released for either of them? Like how fast a processor and how much ram etc.?

Gimmicks!

Valdemar laughs, laughs I say, at those that insist on buying every console out there especially when brand new.

Valdemar knew many people who bought the first version of the N-Gage for full price only to find a newer, better designed version come out for cheaper.

My GB Colo(u)r has always been faithful to me when the need for portable videogaming has been necessary.

Other than that, I read a damn book.

People who have used the DS say its easy to get used to, and its very fun.

On the PSP, we have seen NO games running on it, only movie trailers, makes me wonder.

IIRC, Nintendo has always been pretty dedicated to their portable machines, if not their home consoles.

We have seen mockups though, which look like reasonable PS2 games.

My bad, watching GS live, it seems some games running, I don't remember names. But why music\video\games? Why are they going the bloated N-gage way?

Yes, and the PSP is far more powerful. The PSP uses a MIPS CPU very similar to the one in the PS2 with 32MB of RAM and 4MB of embedded cache on the GPU (strikingly similar to the PS2 eh?). For all intents and purposes, the PSP is just as powerful as the PS2, only in a handheld package.

Judging by what we've seen of the DS games, it doesn't appear to be even as much of a polygon pusher as the N64. We'll know more as soon as Nintendo releases official specs.

No, I think the games were humiliation enough.

Nice. I might actually look into getting one once they come out.

One of the pictures of the DS had Mario Kart 64(?) on the display. A wall looked extremely pixelated as if it was rendered on a 486.

OTOH, the Metroid game looked 64'ish
"Right now we can tell you a report was filed by the family of a 12 year old boy yesterday afternoon alleging Mr. Michael Jackson of criminal activity. A search warrant has been filed and that search is currently taking place. Mr. Jackson has not been charged with any crime. We cannot specifically address the content of the police report as it is confidential information at the present time, however, we can confirm that Mr. Jackson forced the boy to listen to the Howard Stern show and watch the movie Private Parts over and over again."

Actually, there were games running on it at E3, which my understanding is looked "fantastic".
