US Version of Red Dwarf MY ARSE! We have to put up with putrid shows like Friends- if that's humour then give me a spoon and I'll gladly eat my own ass.

Idiots, fools, bastards!
Hey, America did produce the Simpsons, South Park, Futurama and Family guy, as well as Mystery Science Theater 3000, so lay off!

You may think Friends is bad, but it wasn't as bad as say, Seinfeld (which is a crime against humanity) or Absolutely Fabulous (a misdemeanor).

The networks and studios right now are remaking every damn movie, show or comic book that was ever successful, anywhere. It's not all about your Island.

You've never heard of Who's the Boss?????????????

Have you heard of a little decade called the 80s?

Who's the Boss is as much a part of 80s culture as the A Team or Alf! It's living greatness*!

I always thought The Upper Hand was an Anglicanised version of Who's the Boss, as if to prove that America was not alone - Britain too could produce a totally fucked-up, unfunny Xerox of a successful comedy from abroad.

When I was little, my older sister would get mad that our mom would let me watch Who's the Boss? but not her.

No, I used to watch The Upper Hand but only because not a lot else was on between Airwolf and i]Dangermouse[/i]. It never had a lasting impression as you can see.

Don't- you'll give them ideas.

Studio Executive 1: Well, it's this show that was big in the UK a few years back.
Studio Exec 2: But it deals with history and stuff like that.
SE1: No problem- we'll simply make him a minuteman and have him and his sidekick Baldrick repeatedly foil the eeeeeevil British
SE2: We'll need to appease the minority demographic
SE1: Well we'll make Baldrick an African-American
SE2: And the female demographic?
SE1: Molly Miggins, the heroic American spy!

and so on...

Absolutely Fabulous is just that (am I mistaken or are you implying there is an American Version  - I don't even want to envisage that)

Pass me that spoon anyway, because I agree the Simpsons is fantastic, even though it is one big homage to the British ;) Ah. Um, one think I find common in the majority of your listed US comedy is they are animated. I still stand my proclamation, well, a revised version. Live action US Comedy is Teh Suck :D

Uh-oh...

The scary thing is that I can really envision that train of thought taking place in a studio executive's mind.

I think I can sum up the general difference between mainstream US humour and mainstream British humour

US humour- Scary Movie 1,2 and 3
UK humour- Shaun of the Dead

Smeggin' right.

On a side note, I went to a rugby match that my uni was playing in last Friday and one of the sponsor billboards around the side of the pitch said Smeg Inc.

That'd probably be the company they stole the term from. I never knew they still existed until I saw a Smeg fridge-freezer last year.

I thought the term was supposed to be short for smegma.

smegma
A sebaceous secretion, especially the cheesy secretion that collects under the prepuce or around the clitoris.

[Latin smgma, detergent, from Greek, from smkhein, to wash off.]

smegma

\Smeg"ma\, n. [NL., fr. Gr. ???? soap, fr. ????? to wash off.] (Physiol.) The
matter secreted by any of the sebaceous glands. Specifically: (a) The
soapy substance covering the skin of newborn infants. (b) The cheesy,
sebaceous matter which collects between the glans penis and the foreskin.

Drek like Alf, Who's the Boss and the other hideous sitcoms of that era make me very grateful for the nature of time. Every moment takes me further away from that sacchrine idiocy.

The music was good though.

I'm pretty sure it was the British version that was on Comedy Central in the 90s. I would sit through it since it was sandwiched between shows that were actually funny. Maybe the humor didn't translate at all, but I couldn't laugh at any of their jokes if you held a gun to my head.

Well, there are some funny live action shows, like SG1 and Buffy (seasons1-3), but they are not exactly comedies. Then there is Conan O'Brien, which is funny usually, and the Dave Chapelle Show, which has its great moments.
Some old Comedy Central shows were quite funny, like Comics Only and Almost Live.
Cheers had a few good years...
That Fox show where Jay Mohr played a movie studio exec was quite good, but it was cancelled pretty damn fast. Ditto the Tick. And speaking of Fox, Malcolm in the middle started out pretty strong...

I guess the best American comedies just aren't SitComs.

I'm not arguing that they weren't crap. It's just that they're the crap we grew up with. I still enjoy a good Tony Danza impression. "MO-nuh, AAN-geluh, Suh-MAN-thuh!" Hee-hee-hee!

For music, you can't beat shows like the A-Team, Knight Rider, Airwolf and Magnum PI. Not that the shows were great masterpieces, but they rocked!

I know what you mean. The Cosby Show is utter crap but whenever I visit my parents in San Fransisco each summer I spend my late evenings watching back to back Cosby Shows on Nick-at-Nite. Hope they're still running that.
