I have learned a new acronym....

Post by Enigma »

...that I want to use. It came from the late Douglas Adams' game called "Starship Titanic", (nice game).

The new acronym is SMEF (Spontaneous Massive Existence Failure) and I love it. :) I hope I go out that way should the day of inevitablility arrives. :)

A sudden spontaneous existance failure? Didn't that happen once or twice in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy?

SMEF is something like- they thought was that anything it was infinitely improbable that anything would go wrong with the ship, but due to some wonky physics it was actually very likely to happen almost immedietly, and the entire thign folded up like an Arcturian Mega-whale in a black hole or something. I just remember it was near the bit about the GSS Courage, GSS Audacity and the GSS Suicidal Insanity.

And what is this super long acronym, anyway? Something to do with dolphin sex?

Well I got that acronym from DA's Starship Titanic game. It mentioned that on it's maiden voyage, the ship wobbled a bit and veered off course and then suddenly experienced SMEF.

In the first or second Hitchhiker's Guide, the Starship Titanic is described as one of the three ships with the most unique drive systems in the universe, along with the Heart of Gold and the Bistromath. The Starship Titanic uses a black hole, but is lost after experiencing SMEF. In the game, and the novelization (written by Terry Jones, go find it and enjoy!), we learn that the SMEF ended up bringing it to Earth, specifically Your Lovely Home. ;)

Didn't the starship have an IID in it, hence, the odd maiden voyage?

And TANSTAFL is great. We used that a lot in biology for thermodynamics and evolution.

You also have classics like FUBAR and GIGO.
