I hardly consider King Diamond's concept albums a typical sample of ghost stories.

I knew a shitload of girls named "Tabitha," "Jennifer,"and "Ashley" to the point that it seemed at times that I was the only girl who wasn't named one of the three. And then there moved in a girl who had the moniker "Crystal Rainwater." I don't really care for trendy names or general weirdness. If I ever have kids, they'll be named something that's neither super-popular at the moment nor incredibly odd. They won't get confused when half the other kids have their name, and if they want weird, they can get a nickname and not have the other kids make fun of them.

I have no idea what exactly those names would be, though. But it won't be "Tabitha," "Jennifer" or "Ashley" barring very special and weird circumstances.

I think it's just me, but Amber & Tabitha are porn names, and Crystal is a name a stripper would have.

Same goes for Nikki, Skye, Tawny and Vanessa.

BTW - I have a friend who thinks that Linda is a hooker's name... though I don't know where he got that from.

BTW#2 - it seems like "alterna-spellings" make certain female names more slutty, ex. Crystal/Krystal

Yes, it is, and my last name isn't MacKenzie but you did get the first three letters right.

Nathan is my name, and I like it heh. Only known maybe two others with my name growing up and other than "Nathan's Famous Hotdogs" I cant think of any other noteable Nathans off hand.

Anyway doesnt seem to be a very popular name, which suits me just fine.

Couple years ago, my high school graduated someone named "Shadowmoon". I shit you not.

And "Beth" can also be short for "Bethany", which is a good name.

My favorite girls' name would have to be Gwendolyn.

Shadowmoon? Sounds like a name an Elf would have.

Kate is probably the most generic name in existence.

Kate, Katie, Cait, Caitlin, Katelin, Catilyn, Catherine, Katherine, Kathy...

you get the idea..

I might name my daughter Elise.. unless I'm married to one... which I hope I will be... but far from guarenteed.

in which case I suspect the name will end up being Tess or Jessica. which isn't too bad. but not my choice. I don't like the name Tess.

Or else I might end up having no daughters, in which case this is purely an acedemic excersize.

I know somebody named Tess. She's really hot, but for some reason she's regarded among her acquaintances as somewhat of a skank. (I don't really know why)

It's not one of my favourite names though.

Isn't your name Kristin followed by a lot of strange middle names?

As for my stance on the name Emma... I think it's a kinda cute name, but it sounds rather Victorian.

A-yup. Although, I don't think the middle names are strange, exactly...

That's probably due to Jane Austen.

And I happen to think Emma is a very pretty name.

It seems that celebrities are really big offenders in the "stupid baby name categories", especially when there's no explanation for the name. Like recently, Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow named their baby "Apple" because "It sounded cool", once again proving that having children is a preivelige.

Durandal wrote:Anyone ever see George Carlin's bit about names?

"Whatever happened to real names, like Nicky, Vinny or Tony? I'll tell you what happened. Tucker, Kyle and Todd. These are weak names, and weak names make for weak people. I'll bet you that ten times out of ten on the school playground, Nicky, Vinny and Tony will beat the shit out of Tucker, Kyle and Todd."
Oh yeah. Carlin's always been my favorite comedian. When I was 5, I sneaked a quick peak at one of his stand-up shows on HBO. Shortly thereafter I ran to ask my parents what a "blowjob" was :D

Anyway, the bit you're talking about was funny:

"Hi, what's your name?"

"TODDDDDDDDDDDDD!"

As far as the top 10 names for baby girls go, only Kaitlyn, Hailey and Olivia stick in my craw. Olivia's okay, but it brings to mind Tony Soprano's mother--a less than pleasant image. The other two just seem a bit affected, as if the parents were trying too hard to come up with something for being different's sake.

Boys' names: I can't say I'm partial to Nicholas. Call him Nick and it'd be okay, but the full name invokes images of Santa Claus.

Zachary...nah. With apologies to anyone at the BBS named Zack, the name reminds me of a ridiculous cartoon character, Zax, Duke Power used in some of its old ads (picture a cross between a Smurf, a gumdrop and a small Shrek with a calculator strapped to its chest).

Those ads kept me from much needed doses of Transformers and G.I. Joe, so Zax, whereever you are now: go fuck yourself.

Let's see...Tyler sounds a bit like "Taylor"; and believe you me, after hearing my own name misspelled and perverted over the years (Shane, Shawn, Shaun, Shun, See-anne), the last thing I'd do is give my kid ANY name that could be confused with another.

Overall, though, it's not such a bad list. I would've liked to seen "Elisabeth" on there, but nobody asked for my input ;)
