Czech republic to legalize prostitution, morons object

I was just skimming through the news, and for some reason found this hilarious:

Last month the government gave the go-ahead to a new law that would legalise prostitution.

Under such a bill, offering sexual services would become a profession regulated by the state, possibly defined as freelancing rather than as a business. Such laws already exist in Austria and Germany, the bill's authors say.

According to estimates cited by the internet magazine Czech Happenings, up to 25,000 people earn their living as prostitutes in the Czech Republic.

But the move has already drawn criticism from abroad.

Pravo carried a story this week saying President Vaclav Klaus and the heads of both chambers of parliament had received a letter from the US Southern Baptist Convention warning against the planned legalisation of prostitution.

Why? The arguement goes that legalised prostitution actually provides a safety net for sex workers, by not making them feel like criminals who have to hide from the police.

Sure they could stay home and never travel to Europe. Oh wait, that's probably a good thing from the European's point of veiw. I also doubt that the types of Southern Baptists who are complaining about stuff like this do a whole lot of traveling abroad anyway except to annoy the crap out of people in the form of missionaries.

Depends on what kind of feminist you consider. There are a few that are reasonable, and fight for equal rights, but unfortunately they're drowned out by the fundy-feminists that give the rest a bad name.

You know the ones I'm talking about. The ones that claim that males are responsible for all the ills in the world (possible, but rather far-fetched), that all males are bad (easily debunked, I mean, look at me, I'm the spitting image of purity and goodness), and that women would be better off if all males were dead.

Like other fundies, they also suffer a messiah complex in that they twist everything they see as some sort of method of subjugating women. Higher education? Feh, enslaving women to the male controlled areas of math and science! Legalize prostitution? Feh, it's merely making the exploitation of womens' bodies into law. Never mind the fact that some women A)Don't mind it, and in fact may like it, and B)Make damn good money off of it, taking it from men no less.[/rant]

Anyways, being a feminist myself (in that I support equal rights for women, and feel that the reasonable female voice is considerably under-represented), I have to say that the fundy-version are just as annoying, if not more annoying, than most fundies.

This is actually kind of interesting to me, because I was in the Czech Republic last year and it was already kinda leading up to this.

In the CR, the prostitutes don't wander around outside, with the rain and cold and all that. Apparently the local business-owners felt 'sorry' for them, so a lot of convenience stores have little rooms with windows facing the street set aside for them to, ah, ply their wares.

And now it's legal too. Awesome.

Just for the record, the young, up and coming feminist organisation that is FHM (Feminism Helps Men, we had our second meeting on Friday & over 20 people turned up, if we keep up this rate of growth the entire population of the world will be members in no time ) is in favour of fully legalising prostitution and bringing sex workers under the full protection of the law. Women own their bodies and have the right to do whatever they choose with them, the law should recognise this.

The prostitution laws in the UK are joke (and a very bad one at that) selling sex is legal as long as you are the only person in the building doing so, it essentially makes safe working practices illegal and forces prostitutes to work alone. The police couldn’t give a fuck when prostitutes are attacked and hardly bat an eyelid when they are murdered, I saw a fairly credible documentary last year in which a high ranking policeman estimated that at any one time there are at least 3 serial killers in the UK targeting prostitutes and catching them isn’t a priority.

Sounds like they have that law for the express purpose of getting sex workers killed. There's no way around the conclusion that the police and the legislature _WANT_ them killed considering the evidence you posted. Bastards.
