We have a much more comprehensive 'Public Transport' system than the States, i.e- Bus Travel is very popular and cheap- but crowded, Trains (are not as bad as made out), light rail tram services... but that's beyond the point, we all have cars, and I drive upto 10 miles per day, most weeks.

And we're paying these extortinate petrol prices, on top of extortionate road tax and insurance prices...

Here in New Jersey the lowest I've seen in the past week is 1.83/gallon. Most have been $1.90-$2.00 however. I remember about four years ago before I started driving my parents always had to pay around $1.20/gal. Those were the days.

My Mom was telling me some guy she works with says that apparently this wednesday the 19th there is some boycott going on. Don't buy gas on that date if you can at all avoid it. I haven't heard it anywhere else but I'm gonna do it just because I have a half tank left and am not gonna have to fill up till next week probably.

87 octane is around $2.25 or so around here. Its goes up and down, I don't pay too much attention. I'm sure by this summer it will be around 3 bucks a gallon. Everything is expensive here.

Why is Petrol this expensive.

Car-related taxes are now so high that I believe it's more than just the government exploiting an easy source of revenue. I believe someone has decided there's too many cars - and, although I'm a total car addict, I admit that there could be some validity to this view. Anyway the objective appears to be to tax the private car out of existence.

But that's nothing like the persecution that haulage companies suffer; there's an unbelieveable set of additional taxes and inspections that lorries get. This is why you now see so many of those JCB FastTrak things (a big, fancy and very fast tractor) pulling trailers of material and even containers about - they are taxed as an agricultural vehicle.

Want a tip? Here's what I'm told. I haven't verified this, but it comes from a usually reliable source. For the private motorist, the snow-plough rules can be exploited. Apparently, someone also decided that there aren't enough snow-ploughs, and the tax rules have therefore been relaxed. What you do, is get a credible 4x4 - a Disco or Landrover is ideal. You get a couple of brackets fixed to the front bumper, which are ostensibly to hold the snow-plough blade (which you do not have to carry at all times). You then register your vehicle as a "specialist vehicle" - the tax disc comes for free, no MOT is required, you can run on red (agricultual, reduced tax) diesel, and it can be insured as "industrial plant" (maybe £100/year). The only downside - you are supposed to cover no more than 3000 miles in the six "summer" months, although this could (if you were so inclined) be circumvented by the usual illegal methods. As an additional benefit, you could even earn a nice sum actually clearing snow off private roads and so on.

Apologies to the non-UK people, because I realise that transport terms seem to be one area in which mutual non-comprehension is rife.

Incidentally, the one and only time in my life I've been involved in direct political action was participating in the 2000 fuel blockade.

1) Prices are going up in the US as well.

2) Its actually still cheaper than it was at the last peak, in real money, according to the Telegraph.

I don't drive as Lancaster has superb public transport so I laugh at those that have cars here and pay student grade insurance on top of the fuel prices.

Oil will continue to rise for the short-term at least, when oil reserves start to show signs of drying up or a limit is predicted, then you'll see what high-prices really are.

It's just ridiculous the amount of money it costs to run a personal vehicle. I use public transport alot, I don't go to college in the car (bus stops right by my house and I meet a few friends aboard, then walk into college from where it stops). I use the Manchester Metrolink (LRV system) - which though is ridiculously expensive also.

Like I say, it's just the convenience of having a car, so I'd rather 'just not drive'- I'd rather we just didn't have to pay 400%+ tax on petrol, lol.
